The Las Vegas Raiders will start Jarrett Stidham as their quarterback against the San Francisco 49ers in Week 17. Raiders head coach Josh McDaniels confirmed that Stidham would replace long-time starter Derek Carr, who has thrown a league-high 14 interceptions this season.

Stidham was signed in an offseason trade from the New England Patriots and will make his first start of the campaign on Sunday. However, the 26-year-old has made three appearances for the Raiders since joining the team earlier this year. He has completed eight of his 13 passes for 72 yards this season.

The Patriots picked Stidham in the fourth round of the 2019 NFL Draft. He spent two seasons with the team, making eight appearances and throwing for 270 yards on 24 passes and two touchdowns.

Stidham played college football with Baylor for one season and then had a two-year sojourn at Auburn, winning the Music City Bowl MVP in 2018. He finished his collegiate career throwing for 7,215 passing yards and 48 touchdowns with 13 interceptions. He also added 224 rushing yards and nine touchdowns on the ground.

In his NFL career, Jarrett Stidham has only thrown 342 passing yards on 32 passes. He has two touchdowns and four interceptions to his name.

Stidham is considered a dual-threat quarterback and could offer the Raiders a different attacking option compared to Carr. The Las Vegas backup quarterback will be hoping to get his first touchdown of the season against the Niners this weekend.

The Raiders are currently 6-9 this campaign and third in the AFC West. They have almost no hope of reaching the playoffs, but Stidham will have a chance to showcase his ability in the next two regular-season games. If he performs well, he could be considered the team's starting quarterback next season.
