Regular starter Matthew Stafford suffered a concussion in the Los Angeles Rams' Week 9 matchup with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. However, he did not display any symptoms until after the game. Stafford's matchday status is questionable and it is currently unclear as to who will start under center in Week 10.

John Wolford is the Los Angeles Rams' backup quarterback. He is classified as the QB2 on their depth chart and may have to start Sunday's game against the Arizona Cardinals. Wolford has thrown two interceptions and no touchdowns in just two appearances on the field during the regular season. Bryce Perkins, the third-string quarterback for Los Angeles, is also a contender even though he hasn't yet featured in a regular-season game.

Matthew Stafford might be in line for his first layoff since joining the Rams in 2021. He hasn't trained since entering concussion protocol on Tuesday. Head coach Sean McVay could declare Stafford ineligible or name backup John Wolford as the starter if Stafford doesn't return to practice by Friday. Bryce Perkins will serve as Wolford's backup if he starts on Sunday.

According to Sean McVay, the symptoms were believed to be related to the game. However, Matthew Stafford never left the field of play, and neither team reported any injuries during the game. Los Angeles Rams fans will remember Wolford's lone regular-season start against the Cardinals in Week 17 of the 2020 campaign as a game they had to win. Once again, the Rams are in dire need of a victory against Arizona, as the loser of this contest will be in last place in the NFC West.

If Wolford were to start instead of Stafford, Sean McVay would have to make significant changes to the scheme. The Rams' offensive unit hasn't been a well-oiled engine this season, and this concussion could not have come at a worse time.

Protecting Stafford is crucial, even if it means leaving him out of a game that must be won. Kelly Stafford, Stafford's wife, stated how important it is for her husband to play this position as safely as possible.

Matthew Stafford's stats and injury records

Matthew Stafford has spent most of his pro career as one of the league's most resilient quarterbacks. However, the offensive line he is playing behind this year is not protecting him. Stafford has been sacked 28 times this season, which is just two fewer than in the entirety of the 2021 campaign.

Stafford has yet to miss a game in his first 29 appearances with the Rams, including four playoff games last season. After guiding Los Angeles to a Super Bowl title in his first season, the QB is struggling this campaign. Stafford has completed a career-high 68.4% of his passes this season for 1,928 yards, but he has thrown eight interceptions and only eight touchdowns.

We will see if Matthew Stafford is able to play in Week 10. With the game just around the corner, the next few days are crucial.
