Why was Jordan Love being compared to Patrick Mahomes in 2020?

Is it finally Jordan Love's time in Green Bay? The Packers traded up in the 2020 NFL draft to select Love with the 26th overall pick and he has seen very little action since.

He was a highly-rated prospect coming out of the draft as he was Utah State's quarterback for three seasons. He had a remarkable 2018 season where he threw for 3,567 yards, 32 touchdowns and six interceptions while rushing for seven touchdowns.

Despite his remarkable collegiate career, he did throw 29 total interceptions in three seasons.

Coming out of college, he was compared to Patrick Mahomes, who is one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL today.

During the 2020 NFL draft, NFL Network reporter James Palmer compared Love to Patrick Mahomes. Palmer told Sky Sports:

"I'm hearing a lot of love for Jordan Love. He has the arm talent which one quarterback evaluator I trust tremendously says he would put up against anybody in the last four drafts.
"Doesn't mean he'll be a great player, doesn't mean he'll live up to that, it's just that the talent he has to throw the football is Patrick Mahomes-esque, so that's why there are a lot of people intrigued with him."

Like Jordan Love, Patrick Mahomes also threw exactly 29 interceptions in college. The two were also first-round picks that sat behind veteran quarterbacks.

When Mahomes was drafted by the Chiefs, he sat behind Alex Smith for a year before becoming the starter. Love has been Aaron Rodgers' backup quarterback for the last three seasons, but may finally be the team's starter in 2023.

When the Green Bay Packers traded up in the 2020 NFL draft to select Jordan Love, many were surprised. Aaron Rodgers was still playing the best football of his career and it seemed an odd time to be selecting his replacement.

After three seasons of being Rodgers' backup, it seems like it's time for Love to be the Packers' starting quarterback. The team is expected to trade Rodgers to the New York Jets this offseason, once compensation is agreed upon.

Love has appeared in 10 total games in his three-season NFL career. He's completed 50/80 passes for 606 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions.

He's had enough time learning and sitting behind Rodgers to have the chance to become the next great quarterback for the Green Bay Packers.
