Why is the Super Bowl so late this year in 2023? NFL's extended season explained

Super Bowl LVII - Previews
Super Bowl 2023 will take place at State Farm Stadium in Arizona

Super Bowl 2023 between the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles is scheduled to be played on Sunday, February 12. However, the date of the game being played this year is later than usual.

Following the implementation of the new format last season, each team played 17 regular-season games for the second time in the 2022–23 NFL campaign.

This year's big game, like last season's, will be played a week later than the old traditional date because the regular season is longer.

The Super Bowl occurred on the first Sunday of February between 2004 and 2021. However, after modifications to the structure and schedule were made in 2021, the event is currently held on the second Sunday of the month instead.

Why is Super Bowl no longer in January?

The Super Bowl schedule has been altered in the past. After the first iteration (which took place in 1967), January became the standard month for the event for 34 years.

In 2002, it was moved from the final weekend of January to the first weekend of February. The Super Bowl was played on January 26, 2003, but in 2004, the NFL moved the game back to February.

Since then, February has been the month for the big game.

How long does the Super Bowl usually last?

While the game consists of four 15-minute quarters that total 60 minutes, the Super Bowl lasts for an extended period. On average, the event can take over four hours to complete due to pre-game and halftime shows.

Why is the Super Bowl on a Sunday night?

The Super Bowl is always held on a Sunday night to attract larger audiences. Even non-football fans can enjoy extravagant halftime shows and the commercials that air during the big game.

Why are there 17 regular season games in the NFL?

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell instructed the league to add an additional regular-season game from the 2021 campaign for various reasons. Most of which had to do with the significant revenue generated from matches and wanting to host more games internationally.

Is the Super Bowl a special day in America?

People dress in the jerseys and outfits of their favorite teams during Super Bowl celebrations across the nation. For the event, eateries and bars typically set up special watch areas and may provide discounts on food and beverages.

The Super Bowl will be held at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, this year. It will be the third time the grand event will be held at the stadium.

The New York Giants, who broke the New England Patriots' impeccable record in 2008, claimed the first Super Bowl win in Glendale.

The Patriots defeated the Seattle Seahawks in 2015 to win the second Super Bowl hosted at State Farm.

Another champion will be declared on the field in Glendale this Sunday when the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles square off in Super Bowl 57. Kickoff for this crunch matchup begins at 6:30 p.m. ET.
