Will Patrick Mahomes play his entire career with the Kansas City Chiefs?

Can you picture Patrick Mahomes playing for a team not named the Kansas City Chiefs? Just the thought of that would make any Chiefs fan sick to their stomach.

While it won’t happen anytime soon, it’s possible that one day down the road he’ll end up leaving Kansas City for another franchise.

Mahomes was selected by the Chiefs with the 10th overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft. After backing Alex Smith as a rookie, he became the starting quarterback in his second year.

The former Texas star has gone on to win a Super Bowl MVP, a regular season MVP and earn five Pro Bowl selections. And oh, yeah, he led Kansas City to two Super Bowls, winning one against the San Francisco 49ers during the 2019 season.

What an amazing career it has been thus far for Mahomes, who’s currently in his sixth season. He’s arguably the best player in the league right now and could eventually be considered one of the top two or three quarterbacks of all time. Yeah, his potential is through the roof.

Mahomes will likely win his second NFL MVP this season. And it wouldn’t shock the world if he leads the Chiefs, who are one of the best teams in the league once again, to another Super Bowl victory this February.

Throughout NFL history, we’ve seen a few Hall of Fame quarterbacks spend the majority of their careers with one franchise before retiring with another.

Johnny Unitas is a prime example. He played for the Baltimore Colts from 1956 to 1972, winning a Super Bowl, three NFL championships and three MVP awards. He ended his career in 1973, playing five games with the San Diego Chargers.

Joe Namath, who upset the Colts in Super Bowl III, spent 12 seasons with the New York Jets before finishing with a four-game stint with the Los Angeles Rams.

After leading the 49ers to four Super Bowl victories during his 14-year career with the franchise, Joe Montana played his final two seasons with the Chiefs.

Brett Favre is known mostly for his tenure as the Green Bay Packers’ franchise QB. But his last two teams were the Jets and Minnesota Vikings.

Peyton Manning finished with the Denver Broncos after years as the face of the Indianapolis Colts.

Tom Brady, of course, signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2020, following twenty years with the New England Patriots. And he might head to another team this offseason.

It remains to be seen if Mahomes will retire with another team. But seeing how Hall of Fame signal-callers have done so in the past, it’s definitely not out of the question.
