Johan van der Wath: A Brief Biography

Johan van der Wath Biography


Johannes Jacobus van der Wath was born on 10th of January 1978 in Natal Province,South Africa. He is a bowling all-rounder, right-handed batsman and right-arm medium-fast bowler.


Johan is known for his slower deliveries and quick run making capabilities when coming in at middle order of the batting line up.


Background


Back in 1995, Johan began his cricket with the Easterns in South Africa. He then went on to join Free State in 1997 where he spent 7 seasons playing for them before joining the Eagles.


Johan displayed his qualities in first two seasons, he was selected by the Protea selectors and got an International call later during his second season with the Eagles.


Debut


Johan made his ODI debut on 20th of January 2006 against Australia at Docklands Stadium, he bowled five overs gave only 21 runs and snatched two wickets. Stepping into T20 on February 26 2006 vs Australia at The Wanderers Stadium, Johan made 14 runs off 7 balls, and wasn't very economical with the ball.


Rise to Glory


Johan was never selected for test cricket, but played regularly for the South African side in the ODI and T20 format of the game.


Earning his call for International cricket when Jacques Kallis was injured in the 2005-06 VB series, Johan went on to take 10 wickets in the tournament.


He played 10 ODIs and 8 T20 matches. One of the matches saw Johan scoring a rapid 35 runs from 18 balls, when the African side were chasing the historical score of 434 against Australia.


Low Points


Johan started playing for rebel Indian Cricket League and was banned from International cricket for the same. He returned to the South African side after 2 years.


Club Career


Johan joined Sussex in 2005 as an overseas player, playing 17 matches for them. He went on to join Northamptonshire in 2007, unfortunately he couldn't finish the season with them and was called for World T20.


Johan had an impressive season with the Northants picking up 50 first class wickets and scoring a little less than 500 runs.


Johan joined Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2011 for 1 season only.
