Edward Smith Fatu was an American professional wrestler. He is famous for his work with WWE under the name, Umaga. He accomplished several accolades before he passed away in 2009.

Professional Wrestling Career


Before WWE (1995-2001)


Fatu trained with his cousin at the Wild Samoan professional wrestling school operated by his family members. He completed his training and wrestled for WXW before signing with WWE.


WWE

First Run (2001-2004)


In 2001, Fatu and Matt signed a developmental contract with the company. In 2002, they were rebranded and made their debut as Three Minute Warning. They were hired as enforcers for Eric Bischoff to attack other wrestlers. In 2003, they released the team from the company.


3 Minute Warning


TNA and NJPW (2004-2006)


In 2003, Fatu debuted in TNA Wrestling under the ring name of Ekmo Fatu. Fatu has several matches before being released a year later.


Fatu made his NJPW debut as Jamal and most often teamed with fellow members Taiyō Kea and Buchanan. In 2005, Jamal won the World Tag Team Championship from Hiroshi Tanahashi and Yutaka Yoshie. They pushed Jamal as a singles competitor for a year before he departed from the company.


Umaga and Various Feuds (2007-2009)


Jamal resigned with WWE and debuted as Umaga. He built an undefeated streak and defeated several high-profile wrestlers. He defeated Kane in a Loser Leaves RAW match and won. After eleven months, Umaga earned a WWE Championship match against John Cena. John defeated Umaga with a roll-up. The two faced each other at Royal Rumble, and Umaga lost.


On RAW, Umaga was named Vince McMahon's representative for "Battle of the Billionaires" at WrestleMania 23. Umaga defeated Jeff Hardy on RAW to win his first Intercontinental Championship. At WrestleMania 23, Umaga lost to Bobby Lashley. He lost the Intercontinental Championship to Santino Marella after Bobby Lashley interfered.


At a rematch on RAW, Jamal won his second Intercontinental Championship from Santino Marella. Jamal lost the title two months later to Jeff Hardy. He received a WWE Championship match against Triple H but lost.

Jamal began his feud with Batista. The two faced each other at WrestleMania 24. Jamal represented RAW and Batista represented SmackDown. Batista defeated Umaga, which ended the rivalry.


In 2008, Jamal was sidelined due to an injury. They drafted Jamal to SmackDown. In 2009, Jamal returned and began a rivalry with CM Punk. Jamal attacked Punk for months and interrupted his attempts to cash in. He defeated Punk at Judgement Day and lost to Punk at Extreme Rules. In June 2009, they released Jamal from his contract.
