Introduced in the Pokemon Sword and Shield games, Corviknight is the final evolution of Rookidee. A flying/steel type, it gains the steel typing when it evolves from Corvisquire. It is a very defensive flier that is not very typical of typing. Every generation introduced a new “route one” bird that you could encounter, and Corviknight is Pokemon Sword and Shield’s equivalent to Pidgeot. This guide will showcase Corviknights' appearances in the anime, its capabilities in battle, as well as other general facts about Corviknight.

About Corviknight

Corviknight was first introduced in generation eight with the Pokemon Sword and Shield games. It also had a minor appearance in the Pokemon Journeys series, however, it had more of a role in the Twilight Wings animated short series. Corviknight is seen to be used as a ferry service and the Pokedex states that it is the supreme ruler of the skies of Galar. The Pokedex also states that they have impressive intellect, probably stemming from its real-life counterpart the raven or crow. Its knightly demeanor may also be based on England’s Tower of London ravens, where these birds are considered to be protectors of the tower. Corviknight is the final evolution of Rookidee, which evolves into Corvisquire at level 18, and finally Corviknight at level 38. This makes it similar to other flying bird Pokemon in previous generations where you could encounter a flying type with three evolutionary stages early in the game.

Appearance of Corviknight

Corviknight is a massive bird at 7 feet and 3 inches, or 2.2 meters, tall. To convey its part steel typing, it has an armored body and its wings resemble the pauldrons on a suit of armor. While it still has the ruffled feathers of a bird around its neck, much of Corviknight’s body looks like plate armor. The crest on its head resembles a simple crown. It is almost entirely black, save for its red and white eyes. It has a rather intimidating appearance, but they are known to get along with certain humans as showcased in the Twilight Wings miniseries. Perhaps a bit too intelligent, it is seen to snap at Chairman Rose in the miniseries, the main antagonist of the Sword and Shield games.

Behavior of Corviknight

Fitting to Corviknight’s intimidating appearance and its ability called pressure/unnerve, it is known to reign over the skies of Galar. The Pokedex states that Corviknight is the strongest bird in this region. It often gets into territorial disputes with Skarmory and will hunt down Bunnelbys for food when possible. Despite its notorious reputation, with its high intellect, it is known to work with humans and offers a taxi service to the humans of Galar. A noble Pokemon, it is shown to care deeply for people in need.

Strengths and Weaknesses

While its reputation would lead you to believe it is quite powerful in battle, its stats are not exactly reflective of the ruler of the skies. While Corviknight is not particularly weak, it is not particularly strong either. In fact, it is more of a defensive Pokemon with high defense and health stats, with low speed and attack stats. As such any special attacking fire or electric type Pokemon can get through a Corviknight with relative ease. However, Corviknight also has the mirror armor ability which reflects any negative stat debuffs back towards its opponents. Truly a defensive Pokemon through and through.

Shiny Corviknight

Shiny Corviknight replaces its black armor with more of silver armor. While regular Corviknight is closer to a black knight trope, Shiny Corviknight is closer to the knight in shining armor trope. Its eyes stay the same color between its shiny variant and regular, but Shiny Corviknight’s talons are also changed to match the rest of its color. The ruffle of feathers around its neck is also changed to match the rest of the color palette. Of course, with all shinies, Shiny Corviknight will have a starry entrance when entering a battle.

Gmax Corviknight

Gmax Corviknight’s appearance changes quite a bit. Sections of the feathers in its wings become yellow and its body more closely resembles plate armor. As with most gigantimax Pokemon, gmax Corviknight also gains glowing red patches of Dynamax. The ruffle of feathers on gmax Corviknight also become more disheveled. Gmax Corviknight’s talons especially seem to gain this ominous glowing red energy. It also gains access to an exclusive move “G-Max Wind Rage” inflicting damage as well as removing any hazards on the field.

Best Moveset

To get the best success with Corviknight in competitive Pokemon battles, you should consider the mirror armor ability as many opponents will utilize the intimidating ability. As a defensive flier, you should have moves that give Corviknight more of a supporting role rather than a sweeping role. Since Corviknight has such high defense and health, a held item like leftovers or a rocky helmet can help abuse this statline. Moves like Body Press/Brave Bird, U-turn, Defog, and Roost are recommended. Body Press will utilize Corviknight’s high defense stat rather than its okay attack stat and Brave Bird will benefit from STAB (Same Type Attack Bonus). U-turn to get some damage in while getting a swap, Defog to remove any terrain or hazards, and Roost to take advantage of Corviknights high health stat.

How to Catch Corviknight in Pokemon Go

Currently, Corviknight is not available for capture in Pokemon Go. At this point in time, no Pokemon from Sword and Shield is in the game. Since Niantic recently released some Pokemon from X and Y, it is logical to assume next in line would be Pokemon from Sun and Moon. It could be a while before we see Corviknight or any of its pre-evolutions in Pokemon Go. As Corviknight is the “route one” bird of Sword and Shield, it is likely its inclusion is guaranteed with time.

Trivia

  1. The name Corviknight is a portmanteau of the words corvid and knight.
  2. In addition to Corviknight’s design drawing from ravens or crows, it is likely to be based on the Ravens of the Tower of London.
  3. Despite regular Corviknight’s impressive size, its gigantimax form is actually one of the shortest of all the gigantimax Pokemon.

FAQs

Q. What Level does Corviknight evolve?

Corviknight evolves from Corvisquire at level 38. You do not need to complete any special objectives to evolve your Corvisquire. It will evolve once you reach the level threshold. Corviknight is the final evolution of Rookidee, so Corviknight itself does not evolve again.

Q. Is Corviknight a good Pokemon?

Corviknight is a particularly defensive Pokemon with high defense and health stats. It does have a gigantimax form with an exclusive move, however, in competitive Pokemon battles, it is common to use Corviknight as more of a supportive Pokemon than a sweeper. So it is a good Pokemon in that regard, but it is not particularly offensive.

Q. What is a Corviknight?

Corviknight is likely based on ravens or crows. As part of its name, any corvid is probably a logical assumption for what Corviknight’s design is based on. There are ravens in the Tower of London that protect over the tower and the crown, so it is likely that the “Knight” half of Corviknight is based on this cultural belief.

Conclusion

Congratulations, you now know what to expect out of Sword and Shield’s common bird-type Pokemon to encounter. While Corviknight’s appearances in the main anime series are rather limited, it makes a number of appearances as the taxi service in the Twilight Wings miniseries. In battle, with the ability to mirror armor, an exclusive gmax move, and good defensive stats, it can be a difficult opponent to get through. A large and intimidating bird, Corviknight lives up to its noble name.
