
Apolo Anton Ohno used to be an American short-track speed skater. He earned eight medals in three Games (2002, 2006, and 2010): two gold, two silver, and four bronze. The U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame and the International Sports Hall of Fame inducted Ohno in 2017 and 2019, respectively. He made history in December 1999 by becoming the youngest skater to win a World Cup title. In 2001, he won the World Cup overall championship, becoming the first American to do so. He repeated the feat in 2003 and 2005. At the 2008 World Championships, he took home his first overall title.
Ohno was named U.S. Speedskating's Athlete of the Year for 2003, the U.S. Olympic Committee's Male Athlete of the Month for October 2003 and March 2008, and a finalist for the Sullivan Award, which honors the top amateur athlete in the United States, in 2002, 2003, and 2006.
