Gunnar Henderson is a shortstop and third baseman for the Major League Baseball (MLB) Baltimore Orioles. He debuted in Major League Baseball in 2022 and went on to win the Silver Slugger Award in 2023 as well as the American League Rookie of the Year Award. In 2024, he was chosen as an All-Star.
Henderson was raised in Selma, Alabama, after being born in Montgomery, Alabama. He played baseball and basketball while attending John T. Morgan Academy. In his sophomore year, Henderson committed to Auburn University to play collegiate baseball. He was selected the Alabama Player of the Year in 2019 as a senior after hitting .559 with 17 doubles, 9 triples, 11 home runs, 69 runs scored, 75 RBIs, and 32 base steals. Henderson was also selected as the basketball player of the year by the Alabama Independent School Association. On January 8, 2021, the Morgan Academy baseball program retired his number two uniform, two years after he graduated in 2019.
