Joseph Paul DiMaggio was a professional baseball player who played for the New York Yankees in the Major League Baseball (MLB) from 1936 to 1942 and again from 1946 to 1951. He hailed from Martinez, California, and attended Galileo High School in San Francisco, California. DiMaggio made his Major League debut on May 3, 1936, and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1955. He recorded a 56-game hitting streak in the 1941 season, which still stands as one of the most iconic feats in the record books.

During his career, DiMaggio was named to the All-Star selection thirteen times and was the World Series champion nine times with the New York Yankees. He also won three American League MVP awards in 1939, 1941, and 1947, while leading the AL in batting, home runs, and RBIs twice. He was named to the MLB All-Century Team and was also a member of the United States National Baseball Team. DiMaggio died on March 8, 1999, at the age of 84 in Hollywood, Florida, due to lung cancer. The Yankees retired DiMaggio's No. 5 jersey as a tribute.
