Anderson's collegiate baseball journey began at St. Cloud State University in St. Cloud, Minnesota, where he played for three years from 2009 to 2011. In 2012, he transferred to Mayville State University in Mayville, North Dakota as part of the NAIA program. Initially drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the 2012 MLB Draft, Anderson chose instead to pursue a career in independent baseball within the Frontier League for three seasons.

In August 2015, his draft rights were acquired by the Minnesota Twins, however, he was subsequently traded to the Miami Marlins.
