Oakland Coliseum Stadium’s History/Oakland Coliseum Stadium Construction and Cost

The Oakland Coliseum was constructed as a multipurpose baseball stadium after popular demand for a new sports stadium in Oakland started in the 1950s. Robert Nahas, a real estate tycoon and his non-profit group of business leaders of Oakland are credited for the creation of the stadium. Construction work started in 1964 and the stadium was inaugurated on September 18, 1966 with a football game. The Philadelphia Athletics were interested at the prospect of having the Coliseum as their own baseball stadium and relocated to Oakland, thereby becoming the Oakland Athletics in 1968. The Oakland Coliseum is notable for being open air, circular and having an “underground” design style. The original concourse of the stadium is above the first level of the ground while the field is 21 feet below sea level. As a result, the stadium looks small from an aerial view.

The Treehouse hosts DJ performances, radio and TV shows both pre and post games.

For kids, the Stomping Grounds is a fun and interactive experience. The Shibe Park Tavern is a nostalgic area as it is made up of bricks from Shibe Park in Philadelphia, where the team was earlier based. This area provides foods and beverages for the fans. The construction of the stadium cost $25.5 million in 1966, which was equal to $230 million in 2022. Major renovations from 1995-1996 cost $200 million, which was equal to $373 million as of 2022.
