Paul Goldschmidt is a professional baseball first baseman for the New York Yankees of Major League Baseball. Born on September 10, 1987, in Wilmington, Delaware, Goldschmidt attended The Woodlands High School where he was part of their Texas state championship-winning team in 2006. He went on to play college baseball for the Texas State Bobcats and was selected by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the eighth round of the 2009 MLB draft. Goldschmidt made his MLB debut in 2011 and played for the Diamondbacks until 2018. In March 2019, he signed a five-year contract with the St. Louis Cardinals and played for the team until the 2024 season, joining the New York Yankees in December 2024.

Goldschmidt is a seven-time AL All-Star (2013–2018, 2022), two-time Hank Aaron Awardee (2013 & 2022), four-time Gold Glove winner (2013, 2015, 2017, 2021), and five-time Silver Slugger Awardee (2013, 2015, 2017, 2018, 2022). He has also represented the United States in the World Baseball Classic (2017), winning a gold medal in 2017 and a silver in the 2023 edition in Miami.

Paul Goldschmidt’s parents are David and Kim Goldschmidt. Along with Paul, the couple has two younger brothers. According to the official website of MLB, David and Kim met while they were attending the Rochester Institute of Technology in New York.

Kim Goldschmidt is Catholic, while David Goldschmidt is Jewish, and they raised Paul and his brothers in the Catholic faith. Paul’s Jewish heritage includes his great-grandparents, Paul and Ilse Goldschmidt, and his grandfather, Ernie, who escaped Nazi Germany in 1938.

Talking about his great-grandparents in a 2017 interview with MLB, Paul said, "They were living in Germany and they figured out what was going to happen to them. All three of them got out and were sponsored by someone. I don't know who. That's what I understand... My grandfather was able to father my dad and him me, and here I am standing here now. I'm sure there are many other similar stories. Not just the Jewish people, but other people as well who were able to escape horrible situations and were able to survive."

Paul's family moved from Wilmington to Dallas and then to Houston due to the flooring company his family owns. (via mlb.com)
