He began his career with the Orix Buffaloes in the Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) league in 2017. In the 2019 WBSC Premier12, he appeared five times and helped Japan win the championship. At the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Yamamoto appeared twice, striking out 18 and allowing only two runs over 11 innings. He helped Japan win the gold medal and was included in the All-Olympic Baseball Team.
