From 2014, he served as an assistant coach under Jim Hayford and then Shantay Legans from 2017-21. During his time as an assistant, Riley helped the program with a Big Sky regular season championship in 2020 coupled with a Big Sky tournament title in 2021.

David Riley's head coaching journey began in 2021 when he took over the head coaching role at Eastern Washington following Legans’ departure. In these three seasons with the program, Riley totaled a 62-8 record with consecutive Big Sky regular season titles in 2023 and 2024. Last season, he led the Eagles to a 21-11 record and earned his second Big Sky Coach of the Year honor following the conclusion of the season. During his first season, he was a finalist for the Joe B. Hall Award. Following the conclusion of the 2023-24 regular season, Riley was announced as the new head coach at Washington State and was the 20th men’s basketball coach in the program’s history.
