Avery Johnson is an American college football player who will return to K-State to play his second season of college football. Johnson started his football career at Maize High School where he led the Eagles to a Class 5A state championship with a 12-1 record. In his senior year, Johnson threw for 2,478 yards and rushed for 817 yards on 98 carries which led to him winning the 2022-23 Gatorade Kansas Football Player of the Year. Johnson was ranked the 77th overall player in the nation in the class of 2023 and was rated the top player in the state of Kansas. The four-star quarterback from Wichita began his collegiate football journey with Kansas State Wildcats after considering offers from top programs like Arizona, Auburn, Arizona State, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Iowa State, Missouri, Nebraska Notre Dame, Ole Miss, LSU, TCU, Tennessee and Wisconsin.

Coming out of an illustrious prep career, Johnson made an immediate impact on K-State in his debut campaign. In 2023 as a freshman, Johnson appeared in eight games with two starts and threw for 479 yards with zero interceptions and five touchdowns. The departure of veteran quarterback Will Howard means freshman sensation Avery Johnson will compete for Kansas State’s starting quarterback position.
