Avery Johnson is an American college football quarterback, currently playing for the Kansas State Wildcats. Johnson began his high school football career at Maize High School where he was rated the 77th-best overall player in the 2023 recruiting class. During his varsity years, he threw for 2,768 yards and 29 touchdowns with three interceptions as a senior. He was the first player from Maize to have won the Gatorade Player of the Year in 2022. He was rated a four-star prospect and was ranked the top player in the state of Kansas by major sports outlets.

Johnson chose to sign with the University of Kansas in 2023 over offers from Arizona State, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Iowa State, Minnesota, Notre Dame, Ole Miss, LSU, Oregon, and Washington among others. In his freshman season, he saw action in eight games with two starts rushing for 296 yards and seven touchdowns with 52 carries, earning himself the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year Award. The Wichita native also threw for 479 yards with zero interceptions and five touchdowns. Johnson earned the MVP honors for his outstanding display in the Pop-Tarts Bowl with 178 passing yards and two touchdowns.
