5 memorable moments from Mumbai Indians’ win over Delhi Daredevils that don’t fade away

Jos Buttler got his side off to a decent start on a tough surface

Tonight’s match between Mumbai Indians and Delhi Daredevils was a low-scoring encounter. But what it lacked in runs, it made up for in entertainment factor. Aggressive and exceptional bowling from the Daredevils helped restrict the hosts to just 142. Mumbai, however, weren’t done just yet. The home team came roaring out of the blocks after the innings break and took just 6.3 overs to send 6 of Delhi’s players back to the pavilion.

From 24/6, Chris Morris and Kagiso Rabada put up a sensational 91-run partnership and threatened to take Delhi to an unlikely win. But, it wasn’t meant to be as some tight bowling at the death by Mumbai Indians bowlers helped them emerge victorious by 14 runs.

Here are 5 memorable moments from the match that don't fade away, quite like the Axe Signature range of body perfumes:

#1 Jos Buttler’s brave innings

Jos Buttler’s innings today was the epitome of fearlessness. On a day when the Wankhede pitch provided plenty of assistance to the bowlers, the Englishman stood tall and churned out a praiseworthy innings of 28 in just 18 balls. The Mumbai Indians top scorer was also the player who had the best strike rate (155.56) of all batsmen on the night. His innings, unfortunately, ended abruptly, thanks to a smart piece of fielding by young Sanju Samson.

#2 Marvelous Mishra

Mishra picked up two wickets in his four overs

Amit Mishra might be a forgotten figure in the international arena, but the IPL remains his favourite tournament. The veteran has played in 118 IPL games so far and has taken 131 wickets in the process.

With the pitch being dry tonight, Diwali came early for the Daredevil spinner as he choked the Mumbai batsmen in the 4 overs that he bowled. He gave away only 18 runs while taking two wickets and completely dismantled the opponent’s batting line-up.

#3 McClenaghan tears into the Delhi middle order

McCleneghan ripped through the Delhi top order

In a low-scoring encounter at the Wankhede, Mitchell McClenaghan was spitting fire with the ball. In a near perfect first spell, the Kiwi pacer took 3 wickets while giving away only 8 runs. His bowling totally desecrated the middle order of the Delhi Daredevils, and gave Mumbai the perfect platform to extend their lead at the top of the table.

#4 Kagiso Rabada and Chris Morris’ valiant effort

Rabada held the Delhi innings together

9, 0, 5, 6, 0, 0. One could be forgiven for thinking this was a pin code or even a phone number. However, these were the scores of the top 6 batsmen of the visitors. When all the main batsmen couldn’t conjure up double figures, a talented young fast bowler had to take matters into his own hands and do the work that the batsmen couldn’t.

When Rabada came in to bat, the score was 21/5 after 5.3 overs. 6 balls later, another wicket fell and Chris Morris came to the crease with the score at 24/6. The duo took matters into their own hands and stitched together Delhi’s best ever partnership for the 7th wicket. Rabada made 44 from 39 balls while Morris scored 52 in 41 balls.

#5 Jasprit Bumrah’s death bowling

Bumrah sizzled at the death yet again

With Lasith Malinga missing out due to illness, Mumbai Indians would have thought their death bowling wouldn’t be as strong. His ability to mix quick yorkers with slower deliveries is one of Mumbai Indians’ biggest strengths.

But, strong men emerge in the face of adversity and Jasprit Bumrah made sure that the team didn’t miss the Sri Lankan. The Indian varied his pace perfectly while keeping the line and length in check to prevent Rabada and Morris from taking the game away from Mumbai Indians.

He ended the match with figures of 4-0-21-2 taking the wickets of Rishabh Pant and Rabada.
