AUS vs AFG World Cup Head to Head Stats & History

Last Modified Sep 29, 2023 14:07 IST

Match No. 39 of the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup 2023 will see Australia (AUS) take on Afghanistan (AFG) at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. The match will be played on Tuesday, November 7, and will start at 2:00 p.m. IST.

Australia and Afghanistan don’t often go head-to-head in international cricket. In fact, they have played just three ODIs and one T20I against each other. Interestingly, all four matches, including the three ODIs, have been won by Australia.

Australia will start their ODI World Cup 2023 clash against Afghanistan as heavy favorites. The Aussies have thus far played in all 12 editions of the Men’s ODI World Cup, and the 2023 tournament will be their 13th representation. Afghanistan, meanwhile, will be part of their third men’s ODI World Cup campaign in 2023.

Ahead of the ODI World Cup clash between Australia and Afghanistan, let us take a look at the head-to-head stats in ODIs and ODI World Cups between the two sides:

Australia vs Afghanistan Head-to-Head Record - ODI World Cup

Australia and Afghanistan have collided twice in the history of the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup. They first met in an ODI World Cup game in 2015 before taking part for the second time in 2019.

Their first-ever meeting at an ODI World Cup in 2015 was hosted in Perth. The match saw Australia record their biggest-ever win in an ODI game when they thrashed Afghanistan by a hefty margin of 275 runs.

Batting first, Australia made 417/6 in their 50 overs. David Warner starred for the hosts as he clobbered 179 runs off only 133 balls. He stitched up a 260-run partnership for the second wicket with Steve Smith, who made 95 off 98 balls.

In the second innings, the Australian pace attack rattled Afghanistan and bundled them out for only 142 runs to win the game by 275 runs.

In their last head-to-head meeting at an ODI World Cup, Australia continued their dominance and registered a win by seven wickets. The match was played in Bristol, where Afghanistan made 207 runs while batting first. While Najibullah Zadran made 51 for AFG, Adam Zampa and Pat Cummins took three wickets each for AUS.

In reply, AUS eased past the total, courtesy of an unbeaten 89 by David Warner and a fifty by Aaron Finch (66). AUS made 209/3 in 34.5 overs.
