IPL 2017: Gujarat Lions vs Mumbai Indians, Player Ratings

Bumrah stepped up in the super pver to hand Mumbai a thrilling win

Gujarat Lions and Mumbai Indians produced the match of the IPL as Jasprit Bumrah's scintillating performance saw the Indians winning in the super over. Mumbai batted first in the super over but managed just 11 runs as they lost both their wickets on consecutive deliveries off the bowling of James Faulkner.

It looked like an easy task for Mccullum and Finch but Bumrah stepped up as Mumbai ran out winners on the night due to the 24-year-old's brilliant yorkers.

Winning the toss, Suresh Raina elected to bat but with Gujarat's top order failing to score big and could manage just 153. Mumbai started well but lost their way in the middle overs as Parthiv Patel's 70 runs knock could not guide the visitors home.

Krunal Pandya helped them to get back into the game but no other batsman stitched a partnership with him which led to a super over. Four brilliant run outs caught the eye as they helped change the tie on its head.

Without wasting further time, let's delve into player ratings for the pulsating encounter: (All the ratings are out of 10)

Gujarat Lions

Brendon Mccullum - 5

The hitman could not get going and struggled from the word go against Malinga. After hitting a four against the Lankan, he attempted a big shot by leaving the crease and was clean bowled on just six runs. He opened the innings in the super over but had no answer to Bumrah's brilliance with the ball.

A sparkling inning from Kishan helped Gujarat start their batting with a flyer

Ishan Kishan - 9

It was a joy to watch the youngster bat. A sparkling inning from Kishan helped Gujarat start their batting with a flyer. His two sixes and a four against Mclenaghan in an over were all supremely timed. After a brilliant knock of 48 from 35 balls, he was holed out by Harbhajan in the deep.

Suresh Raina - 4

A good catch by Pollard made the Lions captain return to the dressing room after facing just three balls. During the second innings, Raina was brave to bring on Ankit Soni in the fourth over when Mumbai were slaughtering the fast bowlers.

Aaron Finch - 2

Apart from his match-winning knock against RCB, Finch has not done anything special in this edition. His struggles continued against Mumbai as he was castled by Malinga without troubling the scoreboard. He had an opportunity to redeem himself in the super over but failed yet again to take Gujarat to victory.

Dinesh Karthik - 5

After losing two wickets in an over, Karthik was needed to anchor Gujarat's batting but failed to do so. He never looked at ease against Mumbai's spinners and was stumped on Krunal Pandya’s bowling. Behind the wickets, he missed a chance to stump Rohit Sharma but made amends by picking two catches in quick succession off the bowling of James Faulkner.

Ravindra Jadeja - 6

The all-rounder came to bat with intent and hit some powerful shots in his short yet important cameo. He scored 28 quickfire runs and if he had stayed on the field, Gujarat would have reached 175.

His struggles continued with the ball as he was given just one over and went for 11 runs in that. What he could not do with the bat or ball, Jadeja did in the field. The leg-spinner got two batsmen out with sharp throws as these two wickets were the catalyst in what turned out to be the game of the season.

What he could not do with the bat or ball, Jadeja did in the field

James Faulkner - 9

Faulkner struggled with the bat as despite spending enough time in the middle, he could not take his batting into the second gear. Two wickets and a splendid run out made his time on the field memorable. He also was given the responsibility of bowling the super over and he did that with perfection, giving away two boundaries and taking two wickets with one ball to spare.

Irfan Pathan - 4

Pathan failed badly in his first appearance of the season as he lost out his wicket in an attempt to increase the scoring rate. He was taken apart by Parthiv Patel in his first over. He gave away 16 runs as he bowled way too short against a player who is good on that kind of deliveries. He recovered well to take the game into super over as he gave away just four runs in last five balls of the match.

Andrew Tye - 7

It was Tye who upped the ante for Gujarat and helped them reach a total of 153. He lost his wicket in an unfortunate run out in the penultimate over. He bowled just one over before he injured his shoulder near the boundary and had to be stretchered off. It does not look good for Gujarat's in-form all-rounder.

Basil Thampi - 8

The youngster took the burden of Gujarat's bowling on his shoulders and took three crucial wickets to help them make a comeback, which looked improbable at one point. Thampi has been Gujarat's shining light this season.

Ankit Soni - 8

The leggie hit a powerful shot on the last ball of the inning and bowled with great confidence. He gave away just 16 runs in his four overs and also took the important scalp of Rana. He also troubled Rohit Sharma during his stay in the middle.

Mumbai Indians

Patel played his best innings of the competition

Parthiv Patel - 9

Patel played his best innings of the competition as he took almost every bowler to the cleaners. He looked confident in his knock of 70 runs as Mumbai lost their way to some extent after he was out caught behind. He also did well to stump his counterpart in the first inning.

Jos Buttler - 4

He started well and looked in good knick. Buttler was giving his opening partner good company in the middle before a terrific throw by Faulkner made him lose his wicket in the power play. Buttler was given the responsibility of opening in the super over but lost his wicket cheaply.

Nitish Rana - 6

Rana hit a brilliant six off Raina and was keeping the scoreboard ticking with singles and doubles. A bad decision by the umpire sent him back. In the field, he missed a sitter off Ankit Soni, after which the leggie hit a last ball six.

Rohit Sharma - 3

His struggles continued against the spinners as he never looked confident in his strenuous time in the middle tonight. He played 13 balls but never got going and was eventually caught behind off the bowling of James Faulkner.

Kieron Pollard - 8

Though he did not do much with the bat first time around, Pollard got into the groove in the super over and helped Mumbai reach a total of 11 runs. He also took a brilliant catch in the first innings to dismiss Raina.

Hardik Pandya - 3

Hardik didn't get a look in during Mumbai's bowling but he disappointed with the bat. He was gone with a catch in the deep and an unnecessary shot in the circumstances led to his dismissal.

He gave away just 14 runs and took 3 important wickets

Krunal Pandya - 9

He turned the match on its head with both bat and ball and delivered yet another match winning performance. He gave away just 14 runs and took 3 important wickets in quick time to help Mumbai restrict Gujarat to a not so big score.

When he came on to bat, Mumbai were in a bit of a spot but Pandya played with conviction and hit some crucial blows to help his team to stay in the game.

Harbhajan Singh - 7

His great time with the ball continued as the veteran showed all his experience in his four-over quota, giving away just 23 runs and picking up the all important wicket of Ishan Kishan. Harbhajan could not do anything with the bat as he was dismissed by Thampi on the first ball.

Mitchell Mclenaghan - 2

A night to forget for the New Zealander as he did not start well against Kishan and then could not recover from his first costly over. Mclenaghan was run out by some magic work by Pathan in the deep as he could not help his side cross the finishing line in normal time.

Jasprit Bumrah - 10

In the first innings, Bumrah gave away 32 runs and also picked up 2 wickets, of Raina and Tye. He came into his own in the super over as he delivered his best ever display with the ball and defended just 12 runs.

Despite bowling a wide and a no-ball, Bumrah held his nerve and did not give even one loose ball to Finch and Mccullum. An over to remember which will surely become the highlight of this tournament!

Lasith Malinga - 8

Malinga was the pick of the bowlers as he delivered his most impressive performance of this season. He claimed two wickets in an over as he departed two big Gujarat batsmen in the form of Suresh Raina and Aaron Finch.
