The Royal Challengers Bangalore dealt with the most disastrous moment in their IPL history as they were skittled out for 49 while chasing a target of 132 set by the Kolkata Knight Riders. Their total is the lowest total in IPL history, falling 9 runs short of the previous record of 58 held by Rajasthan Royals in 2009 when they were skittled by RCB in Cape Town.
Narine top scored with 34 as KKR middle-order falters to restrict them at 131
RCB had won the toss and Virat Kohli opted to field first. Sunil Narine and Gautam Gambhir gave a good start to KKR with the former being the aggressor. However, the dismissal of both openers was followed by the middle-order falling down quickly as well. The brilliant bowling by spinners Yuzvendra Chahal and Pawan Negi restricted KKR to 131 all out in 19.3 overs.
The turning point of the match
In reply, RCB began horribly as Nathan Coulter-Nile produced two moments of absolute brilliance which totally turned the match in KKR’s favour. After bowling a no-ball in the very first delivery of the run-chase, he bowled two pretty decent deliveries and had to bowl to Virat Kohli in the third ball.
He bowled a full delivery outside the off-stump which Kohli mistimed and the ball went towards second slip where Manish Pandey took the catch on the second Kohli. The RCB skipper was out for a duck and this was a crucial wicket for KKR.
After Umesh Yadav dismissed Manish Pandey in the second over, AB de Villiers came in to bat and began with a boundary of only his second delivery. In the third over, Coulter-Nile conceded a run from Chris Gayle in the first delivery and was smashed for a boundary by AB de Villiers in the second delivery.
However, he rebounded brilliantly in the next delivery as he dismissed De Villiers for 8. Coulter-Nile bowled a quick delivery to which ABD tried to pull but got the top-edge and the ball went straight towards keeper Robin Uthappa who held on to it and RCB were struggling at 12/3.
KKR’s brilliant bowling sinks RCB
Coulter-Nile went on to take a third big wicket by dismissing Kedar Jadhav for 9 which turned out to be the highest individual score for RCB. Chris Gayle was struggling and he was finally dismissed by Chris Woakes after scoring an extraordinarily patient knock of 7 from 17 balls.
Woakes went on to take the wicket of Stuart Binny later in the same over. Colin de Grandhomme then joined the party as he dismissed Pawan Negi in the eighth over before Woakes clinched his third scalp by dismissing Samuel Badree in the following over. De Grandhomme ended RCB’s agony by dismissing Tymal Mills and Yuzvendra Chahal in the 10th over to end RCB’s innings at 49.
This was the first time that no batsman from a single team managed to get double-figures in IPL history while all of KKR’s bowlers took at least one wicket. KKR’s win kept them at second position while RCB were pushed to the last position. Coulter-Nile was adjudged the Man of the Match for his spell of 3/21 which included the wickets of three of RCB’s most crucial batsmen.
The Kolkata Knight Riders next take on Rising Pune Supergiants on Wednesday while RCB take on Sunrisers Hyderabad on Tuesday.
