Mumbai Indians (MI) beat Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) by eight wickets in yesterday’s Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 game at the Wankhede in Mumbai. With Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) going down to Gujarat Titans (GT) by six wickets in the last league game, MI confirmed their place in the playoffs.

Sent into bat after losing the toss, Hyderabad scored a competitive 200-5 as openers Mayank Agarwal (83 off 46) and Vivrant Sharma (69 off 47) played impressive knocks. MI, though, chased down yet another target of 200-plus with ease. This time, Cameron Green was the star performer, smacking 100* off 47 balls as MI eased to victory in 18 overs.

Chasing 201, Mumbai lost Ishan Kishan for 14 when he miscued a pull off Bhuvneshwar Kumar and was caught by a diving Harry Brook at midwicket. Green and captain Rohit Sharma (56 off 37), though, added 128 for the second wicket put their team on top.

Even as Rohit struggled for momentum at the start, Green looked in great big-hitting rhythm. He slammed an erratic Kartik Tyagi for two fours and a six as MI reached 60-1 at the end of the powerplay. Two more maximums followed in the next over bowled by Mayank Dagar. Green reached a 20-ball 50 by whacking Vivrant Sharma for a six.

Rohit got better as he spend some time at the crease, whacking Umran Malik for three consecutive fours in the tenth over. The defining stand ended when Nitish Reddy took a blinder at point off Dagar to send back Rohit.

Suryakumar Yadav (25* off 16) joined Green and had some fun, helping the latter in reaching his maiden T20 hundred. The duo added an unbroken 53 for the third wicket, combining to hammer Umran for 20 runs in the 16th over. Fittingly, Green brought up his hundred and MI’s win with a single off Bhuvneshwar.

Openers shine as SRH post 200-5

Batting first, SRH got off to a solid start as openers Agarwal and Vivrant added 140 in 13.5 overs. Both batters looked in fine touch as Hyderabad reached 93-0 at the halfway stage. Looking to capitalise on a great platform, the duo went after Jason Behrendorff in the 13th over, which cost Mumbai 19 runs.

The wonderful partnership ended when Vivrant miscued a pull off Akash Madhwal to deep midwicket. Agarwal carried on in aggressive mode, hammering Kumar Kartikeya for a six and a four off consecutive deliveries. He, too, perished to Madhwal, top-edging a pull to the keeper.

SRH lost their way after their openers were dismissed. Glenn Phillips (1) perished to a full-toss from Chris Jordan, while Madhwal cleaned up Heinrich Klaasen (18) and Harry Brook (0) off consecutive deliveries.

It needed a last-ball six from Aiden Markram (13*) off Jordan’s bowling to ensure Hyderabad touched 200.
