A right-arm seamer from Palghar, Maharashtra, Shardul Thakur's IPL career, just like his professional cricket career, has been a story of constantly fighting against the odds to stay afloat.

Thakur earned his maiden IPL contract from the Punjab Kings (then Kings XI Punjab) in 2014. But, over the course of the next 3 seasons, the Indian seamer could earn just 1 game.

Despite having played a stellar role in Mumbai winning the Ranji title in 2015-16, Shardul failed to get a single game in 2016 even as the teams' performance continued to nosedive.

Matters came to a head when an angry Shardul vented out his fury at the management via a tweet, which he later deleted.

He was subsequently asked to go home by the franchise before being transferred to the Rising Pune Supergiant ahead of the 2017 season.

Thakur played 12 games in 2017 and went on to claim 11 scalps @ 28 apiece. He was eventually picked by the Chennai Super Kings for INR 2.6 Crores in the 2018 mega auction.

While he claimed 16 wickets in 13 outings, his most significant contribution came with the bat during the Qualifier 01 vs SunRisers Hyderabad, where he scored a priceless 15* (5) in an unbeaten 8th wicket stand, led by Faf du Plessis.

The following season proved to be an absolute nadir for Shardul as he failed to deliver with the ball (8 wickets @ 35.12/9.36). To make matters worse, he failed to read a slower yorker from Lasith Malinga in the final, which ultimately led to MI's victory.

However, CSK continued to show their faith in Shardul, and the seamer repaid their trust two years later as he played a monumental role to help the Super Kings claim their 4th title.

Thakur played the role of middle-order enforcer throughout that season, and he eventually came clutch in the final against KKR as he dislodged the well-set pair of Venkatesh Iyer and Shubman Gill to trigger a collapse.

He finished with match-defining figures of 3/38 in 4 overs.

Thakur was released by CSK ahead of the 2022 auction, where he was picked up by DC for a whopping INR 10.75 Crores.

However, he failed to repeat his heroics of 2021, eventually finishing with 15 wickets in 14 outings @ 31.53/9.79.

Thakur will feature for the Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2023 after being transferred by DC during the trading window.
