Wolverhampton Wanderers Vs Brentford

Last Modified Apr 14, 2023 17:47 GMT

Brentford will attempt to keep their European hopes alive when they go to Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday. Although the Bees have been in dreadful form, the hosts pulled up a much-needed win over Chelsea to keep themselves as far away from the relegation zone as possible. The Bees are going to fancy their chances of scoring, but considering Lopetegui and the Wolves' favored style of play, a low-scoring affair is likely.

Wolverhampton Wanderers players

Things haven’t gone according to plan for Wolverhampton Wanderers this season as they were forced to sack Bruno Lage after a poor start to the season and since then, things have barely improved. But they haven’t been helped by the fact that Wolves have struggled to find a consistent goal-scorer. Raul Jimenez is no longer the player he once was while Hwang Hee-Chan and Matheus Cunha haven’t lived up to the mark, and Diego Costa is simply no longer the force of nature he once was.

It means that the onus has fallen onto the defensive to keep things tight, which they’ve done their best at, and for everyone else to step up and find the net. That was proven by an utterly magnificent strike from Matheus Nunes, his first of the season, against Chelsea to end a three game winless run. Daniel Podence has been another on the score-sheet recently as the Portuguese international ended an eight game goalless run with his equalizer against Nottingham Forest in Gameweek 29.

Not exactly good news for Wolves fans especially given a tough final eight games ahead of them although it does give someone a chance to step up, much like Nunes did.

Brentford players

There’s Erling Haaland, there’s Harry Kane and then there’s Ivan Toney. That’s right, the Brentford striker is having a marvelous season and he’s only behind two superstars in the race for the Golden Boot. The Englishman has been a talismanic presence up top for the Bees with four goals and an assist in their last seven games although things haven’t quite gone to plan for Brentford. They’ve won just one in their last five which is amongst their poorest run all season.

That might be because Toney has help from absolutely no-one else as Bryan Mbuemo, Yoane Wissa, Mikkel Damsgaard and co have all struggled for consistency and form. Even then, both Wissa and Mbuemo have a combined 10 goals scored while Mathias Jensen, Mbuemo and Norgaard have provided 13 goals between the three of them. It means that there is help there but just not as much as Brentford fans might have been hoping, especially with dreams of European football floating through their heads.

Brentford, on the other hand, has only won one of their past seven league games against Wolves. The first half of the season's comparable encounter resulted in a 1-1 tie at the GTech Community Stadium, but the good news for supporters is that the two sides have never recorded two draws in the same league season.
