Ranji Trophy 2019-20 will be the 86th season of the tournament. Ranji Trophy is the premier first-class cricket tournament in India. The season will take place from 9 December 2019 to 13 March 2020. Vidarbha is the winner of Ranji Trophy from the last two seasons.
There are a total of 38 teams divided into four groups. Group A and B have nine teams each. Group C and Plate Group have 10 teams each. This is the first time that Chandigarh is participating in the tournament. The groups have been decided based on the team's performance in the previous edition of the Trophy.

A total of 169 matches will be played in Ranji 2019-20. There will be 162 matches in the league stage of the tournament. In the League stage, every team will play one match against every other team in their group. At the end of the League stage, top five teams across Group A and B, top teams from Group C and the top team from Plate Group will advance to the knockout stage of the tournament.
Bottom two teams across Groups A and B will be relegated to Group C. The top teams from Group C will be promoted to Group A and B for the next edition of the tournament. The bottom-ranked team in Group C will be relegated to Plate Group and the top-ranked team of Plate Group will be promoted to Group C.
The Knockout stage will have seven matches, four quarterfinals, two semifinals and the final. The knockout matches will start from 20 February 2020 and the final will be played from 9 March 2020.
The BCCI has agreed to use a limited DRS system for this edition of the tournament in the knockout stage. The limited DRS system will not use Hawk-Eye and UltraEdge
