About WWE Crown Jewel 2023

WWE Crown Jewel is a professional wrestling event produced by WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment). Currently, four Crown Jewel events have taken place, all in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The events are a part of WWE's 10-year deal with Saudi Arabia, in support of Saudi Vision 2030. Apart from Crown Jewel, Super Showdown and Greatest Royal Rumble are the other events under WWE's partnership with Saudi Arabia.

The latest Crown Jewel took place on November 4, 2023 in Mohammad Abdu Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Crown Jewel History

It was in 2018 when WWE entered into a long-term relationship with the Saudi Arabia Ministry of Support in Saudi Vision 2030. The first event was held by the name The Greatest Royal Rumble in April 2018. However, the PPV was held only one time. The next event in Saudi was held on November 2, 2018, by the name Crown Jewel and has been held on the spot since then. The first-ever Crown Jewel saw a WWE World Cup tournament and a tag team match between D-Generation X and The Brothers of Destruction.

The Crown Jewel returned in 2019, becoming the first Saudi PPV to take place twice. It always takes place in early November. WWE couldn't visit Saudi in November 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and thus, the event did not take place that year. It returned in 2021, followed by 2022. While all Crown Jewel events have been held in Riyadh, the first four events were all held in different Stadiums. They took place in King Saud Stadium, King Fahd Stadium, Mohammad Abdu Stadium and Mrsool Park. The fifth edition, i.e, 2023 edition marked event's return to Mohammad Abdu Stadium and took place on November 4, 2023.

Sami Zayn vs. JD McDonagh

Judgment Day has been feuding against the likes of Cody Rhodes, Sami Zayn, Jey Uso, and Kevin Owens for many months now. Zayn and Owens also lost their WWE Tag Team Titles to The Judgment Day. The frustration of the good guys became evident on the group and on their accomplice JD McDonagh. Rhodes and Uso started fighting The Judgment Day separately while Kevin Owens was drafted to SmackDown, leaving Zayn alone in the ring. He wanted to fight the group alone and got a dark match against its accomplice JD McDonagh at Crown Jewel.

Fatal-Five Way match for Women's World Championship

On the September 11 episode of SmackDown, Rhea Ripley defended her Women's World Title against Raquel Rodriguez. On the night, Nia Jax made her surprise return to the company and attacked Rodriguez, allowing Ripley to pick up the win. After the match, she also attacked the champion Ripley. Next week, she interfered in a match involving Shayna Baszler and Zoey Stark. All these tensions started brawls between Ripley, Jax, Baszler, and Rodriguez.

Jax and Rodriguez squared off on October 9 RAW, but the match was ruled out after interferences from Ripley and Baszler. A brawl ensued, followed by another brawl the next week which also involved Zoey Stark. On October 16, 2023 episode of RAW, the General Manager Adam Pearce announced that Ripley would have to defend her Women's World Championship at Crown Jewel against every woman she has been brawling with for the past weeks.

Seth 'Freakin' Rollins (c) vs. Drew McIntyre - World Heavyweight Championship

Seth Rollins became the Inaugural World Heavyweight Champion at Night of Champions in Saudi Arabia. He returns to Saudi Arabia at Crown Jewel for the first time since winning the title. On the October 9 episode of RAW, he was celebrating a successful title defense against Shinsuke Nakamura at Fastlane which was cut short due to an interruption by Drew McIntyre who demanded a title match. Rollins accepted and was ready to fight on RAW but McIntyre stated that he did not want to face a tired Rollins. Instead, the two healed superstars will take on each other at Crown Jewel 2023.

Roman Reigns (c) vs. LA Knight - Undisputed WWE Universal Champion

Roman Reigns defeated his cousin Jey Uso at SummerSlam and went on a vacation right thereafter. In the meanwhile, LA Knight and John Cena became good friends, where Cena supported Knight at Fastlane and the two teamed at Payback to defeat The Bloodline (Jimmy Uso and Solo Sikoa). Reigns returned to SmackDown on the October 13 episode, where he interrupted Cena and offered him to leave the ring voluntarily.

Cena said that he acknowledged Reigns and was not there to challenge him for the gold. However, he introduced someone who was worthy enough to challenge Reigns and it was LA Knight who came out. The Megastar defeated Solo Sikoa in the main event of SmackDown and had a brawl with Reigns afterward. On October 20, a match between the two was officiated for Crown Jewel.

Rey Mysterio (c) vs. Logan Paul - United States Championship Match

After winning a boxing match at The Prime Card on October 14, 2023, Logan Paul challenged the WWE United States Champion Rey Mysterio for the title. Mysterio asked Paul to meet him any Friday on SmackDown. Paul made his appearance on the October 20 episode of SmackDown and reminded everyone that he had already defeated Mysterio at WrestleMania 38. Mysterio then accepted Paul's title challenge and a match was set up at Crown Jewel.

Cody Rhodes vs. Damian Priest

Cody Rhodes, alongside the likes of Sami Zayn, Kevin Owens, and Jey Uso has been fighting against Judgment Day for many months. At Fastlane, Rhodes and Uso defeated Finn Balor and Damian Priest to become the new Undisputed WWE Tag Team Champions but lost the belt in just two weeks. On the October 23 episode of RAW, The Judgment Day celebrated their title victory and Rhodes interrupted the proceedings. He challenged Damian Priest to a match, which he accepted for WWE Crown Jewel.

Iyo Sky (c) vs. Bianca Belair

Bianca Belair won the WWE Women's Championship at SummerSlam 2023 but her celebrations did not last long as Ms. Money in the Bank crashed the party by cashing in her briefcase right after. Few days later, Iyo Sky and her friend Bayley injured Belair and sent her out of the programming. On the October 20 episode of SmackDown, Sky retained her title against Charlotte Flair, following which Belair made her return after two months and got a title match at Crown Jewel.

John Cena vs. Solo Sikoa

Ever since The Bloodline has formed, John Cena has been in a dispute with the group. While he failed to beat Roman Reigns for the title in 2021, Cena did not give up and returned in 2023 to end The Bloodline's dominance. Building up to Crown Jewel, he acknowledged Reigns as one of the greatest champions of all time and introduced LA Knight as his contender. Cena's continued interferences in the matters of Bloodline was not welcomed by the members and a match between Cena and Solo Sikoa was made official for Crown Jewel.
