
In 1984, the United States Golf Association, the country's first formal golf association, was formed. In February 1916, the Professional Golf Association was established in New York City, with Robert White becoming its first president. In October 1916, the first PGA Championship was held at Siwanoy Country Club in Bronxville, New York. Jim Barnes became the first winner of the tournament and received the winning prize of $500 and a diamond-studded gold medal, which was donated by Rodman Wanamaker. In 2016, Jimmy Walker earned $1.8 million by winning the tournament. He was also awarded the replica of the Wanamaker trophy, which was also donated by Wanamaker for the tournament.
In 2024, Xander Schauffele lifted the PGA Championship trophy at Valhalla Golf Club. In 2025, it will be held at Quail Hollow, Louisville, Kentucky.

The format of the tournament has been stroke play from 1958 to the present.
