The Masters - Preview Day 1
Lee Westwood

English professional golfer Lee John Westwood was born on April 24, 1973. One of the few golfers who has triumphed in tournaments on all five continents—Europe, North America, Asia, Africa, and Oceania—and has won on both the European Tour and the PGA Tour.

Westwood has also triumphed in tournaments over the course of four decades, from the 1990s to the 2020s. For the 1998, 2000, 2009, and 2020 golfing seasons, he received the European Tour Golfer of the Year award. He won the renamed 2009 and 2020 Race to Dubai, as well as the European Tour Order of Merit in 2000.

Despite never having won a major event and having a number of close calls, including three runner-up places, he is generally considered one of the best golfers.

In ten Ryder Cups, Westwood has represented Europe. He overthrew Tiger Woods' dominance in the Official World Golf Ranking in October 2010, becoming the first British golfer to hold the top spot since Nick Faldo did so in 1994.

Westwood remained at the top for a total of 22 weeks. The only golfers to accomplish it without ever winning a major are Westwood and Luke Donald. He currently has the most major championship appearances without a victory. Westy, his nickname, is sometimes used to refer to him.

Due to his participation in a LIV Golf event, Westwood was suspended from the PGA Tour in June 2022. The European Tour declared in May 2023 that he had resigned from the tour.

Westwood turned fifty in April 2023, making him eligible to play senior golf at that age. He submitted an application for admittance to the 2023 Senior Open Championship, which was scheduled for late July and for which he qualified under many exemptions.

But in June, he was turned away because of unpaid fines from the European Tour for violating contradictory competition rules.
