Naturally right-handed, he is well known for his left-handed swing, and thus the nickname "Lefty," which he acquired by copying his right-handed father's stroke.

Phil Mickelson’s Masters Tournament Wins

Phil Mickelson has won the Masters Tournament three times, in 2004, 2006, and 2010.

In 2004, after thirteen years on the PGA Tour, Mickelson secured his first-ever major victory. That came at the Masters, where he used an 18-foot putt to birdie the final hole. Ernie Els was the winner at a stroke back; they had played in different pairs in the final round and had traded birdies and eagles on the final nine.

In addition to getting rid of the "majors monkey" from his back, Mickelson—along with Canadian Mike Weir and New Zealander Sir Bob Charles—became the third player with a left-handed swing to win a major.

At the Masters' Tournament in the spring of 2006, Mickelson captured his third major title, finishing two strokes ahead of second-place finisher Tim Clark. Then, in April 2010, defeating Lee Westwood by three shots, he won his third Masters victory overall and his fourth major. His approach shot at the 13th hole was crucial for this win.

Phil Mickelson’s PGA Championship Wins

Phil Mickelson has won the PGA Championship two times, in 2005 and 2021.

A Monday final round at the 2005 PGA Championship at Baltusrol saw Mickelson win his second major because of bad weather the day before. Finishing at 4-under-par 276 one shot ahead of Steve Elkington and Thomas Bjørn, Mickelson made his birdie on the 18th hole after hitting one of his signature soft pitches from greenside rough to within 18 inches of the cup.

At the PGA Championship in May 2021, Mickelson was ahead of Brooks Koepka by one stroke with one day remaining; he defeated Koepka and Louis Oosthuizen by two strokes in the final round, shooting 73 to win the tournament and became the oldest major champion, then-aged 50.

Phil Mickelson’s U.S. Open Wins

Phil Mickelson hasn’t won a U.S. Open yet.

Mickelson has never won the U.S. Open despite numerous attempts and six runner-up finishes in 1999, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2009, and 2013. His sixth runner-up finish at the 2013 US Open is an event record, trailing only Jack Nicklaus' seven runner-up performances in the Open Championship.

Following the event, Mickelson said, "This is tough to swallow after coming so close," and "it hurts," expressing his displeasure at losing again for the sixth time.

Phil Mickelson’s Open Championship Wins

Phil Mickelson has won the Open Championship once, in 2013.

In the week preceding the 2013 Open Championship, Mickelson gained confidence for the occasion by winning his first event in Britain, the Scottish Open, on July 14, via a sudden-death playoff over Branden Grace. Following this triumph, Mickelson expressed his optimism before competing in the major the following week, saying he had "never felt more excited" for the Open.

Mickelson won his fifth major championship the following week; it was the first in history for someone to win both the Open Championship and the Scottish Open in the same year. After finishing his round with tears on the 18th green, Mickelson shot a final round of 66 in which he birdied four of the final six holes to win the title by three strokes.
