Gary Woodland, the 2019 U.S. Open champion, was born on May 21, 1984, in Topeka, Kansas. After receiving a basketball scholarship from Washburn University, Young Gary left the university after just one year to pursue a golf scholarship at the University of Kansas, where he went on to win four amateur golf tournaments.

After graduating from KU in 2007, he turned professional and participated in a few national tournaments. He enrolled in the PGA Q school at the end of the 2008 season, and after finishing tied for 11th, he was granted a PGA Tour card for the 2009 season.

His debut season was relatively modest, as he participated in 18 events but only made the cut in eight, and a shoulder injury worsened the situation. He lost to Jhonattan Vegas in the 2011 Bob Hope Classic, his first playoff event; nonetheless, he won the 2011 Transitions Championship, his first PGA Tour tournament.

Woodland has not won a tournament since his fourth professional victory at the 2019 U.S. Open. He has, however, occasionally finished in the top ten. He revealed in 2023 that he had been diagnosed with a brain lesion, and in late 2023, he had brain surgery.

His 2024 season did not start well due to health issues, but he made the cut in three of nine events, the Genesis Invitational, the Players Championship, and the Texas Children's Houston Open, finishing tied for 21st with a score of 274, under 6.

Gary Woodland’s Driver

Woodland is using the 9-degree head on the new Cobra Darkspeed LS driver. Woodland, a powerful club swinger, features an extremely robust shaft, the Mitsubishi Diamana WB 73 in TX Flex.

In testing, Golf Monthly was very impressed with the Darkspeed LS, especially with its aggressive spin statistics. Without a doubt, it ranks among the top drivers for 2024.

Gary Woodland’s Fairway

As of April 2024, Woodland's 5-wood is the slightly older Cobra LTDx LS design, which has about 19 degrees of loft. Further, he is using the Cobra Darkspeed LS 3-wood at 14.5 degrees with a Mitsubishi Diamana WB 83 TX shaft. His 5 wood has a LINQ shaft made by UST Mamiya.

Gary Woodland’s Irons

Woodland uses Cobra King MB blades with Project X 6.5 shafts for all of their irons, from the four-iron down to the pitching wedge.

In 2023, he told Golf Monthly that "There’s a little less offset, which I like looking down at. It’s a very traditional blade, but the interaction with the turf has been amazing. I literally had no changes made to them; literally right off the rack and I put them in play.”

Gary Woodland’s Wedges

Woodland uses a combination of Vokey and Cobra wedges in his bag. He starts with a 48-degree Cobra SB wedge and moves on to two Titleist Vokey SM9 wedges (52-08F and 56-14F). He returns to Cobra and uses the Cobra King at 60 degrees for his lob wedge.

The 48 degree has the same Project X 6.5 shafts as his irons, but the remaining wedges have slightly softer KBS Hi-Rev 2.0 125 S shafts.

Gary Woodland’s Putter

In 2022, Woodland appeared to be experimenting with his putter. It appears that he has switched to a Scotty Cameron T-5 prototype from his previous Scotty Cameron blade, although we did see him try with a Scotty Cameron Phantom X T5.5 with a plumber's neck design.

Gary Woodland’s Golf Ball

As of April 2024, Woodland uses the Titleist Pro V1x golf ball, but he had previously played with the Bridgestone Tour B X, the same model that Tiger Woods uses. Among the best golf balls money can buy, it offers exceptional all-around performance, great control on the greens, and remarkable long-game distance.
