Vault-Tec Assisted Targeting System, also known as VATS in Fallout 76, was first introduced in Fallout 3 as a feature to automate the combat process. Several changes have been made to VATS since its addition. Currently, when activated, it calculates the probability of hitting specific body parts of an enemy and displays this as a percentage. Shooting at an enemy's arms or legs can disable or completely remove the limb, while shots to the chest are more likely to hit the target accurately.

In previous games, VATS would pause or stop time, which allowed players to carefully plan and think about their shots before hitting them. However, in Fallout 76, developers have changed how it works. This article will explain everything you need to learn about using VATS.

To use VATS in Fallout 76, you must find an enemy to shoot and press the Q button on the keyboard to activate the feature. For PlayStation and Xbox players, it is activated by pressing L1 or LB. The critical mode in VATS can be enabled by pressing Space on the keyboard, Y on Xbox, and Triangle on PlayStation. To exit the system, press Tab on the keyboard (B on Xbox, Circle on PlayStation). While the feature is active, you can toggle between targets using the D-pad or Z and C keys on the keyboard. To change target parts or aim at different limbs, use the right stick on the controller or the mouse wheel on the mouse.

The new VATS system in Fallout 76 allows enemies to be auto-targeted at the range, enabling hip-firing without aiming, which consumes Action Points. The aim-assist feature remains active as long as enough AP is available. The system has been reworked to incorporate the perk card mechanic, with a slight change from previous games.

Standard VATS won't allow you to aim for specific limbs, but the enemy is automatically targeted. You will see a percentage indicating the chance VATS has of hitting the shot. To enable the body-part aiming feature, the Concentrated Fire perk card needs to be equipped.

Knowing basic things about VATS in Fallout 76 is good before using it. In the title, the area can be scanned using this feature, but it comes at the cost of energy. It also consumes fusion Cores when you wear Power Armor.

To further enhance the effects of VATS, you can either go for foods that enhance AP or choose reliable weapons with Legendary effects. Consider consuming AP-enhancing foods such as Corn Soup and Tato Juice. Vegetable-based items like Mutfruit Juice and Carrot Soup can also improve this system's performance by boosting Perception and Agility attributes.

Regarding weapon choices, equipping a 3-Star weapon with a VATS effect and modifier can increase the aim mode function by up to 30%. Legendary effects like "Active" can provide an additional 10 Action Points, while "VATS Enhanced" reduces AP consumption by 25%.

Weapons with the VATS Enhanced effect can help utilize the system more effectively by either increasing the chance of hitting a shot or reducing the AP required to fire one. The Stalker's effect significantly boosts VATS accuracy when firing out of combat, albeit at a slightly higher AP cost.

You can also put points in Agility and Perception, which can significantly improve the consistency of VATS. Higher Agility allows more AP to be spent in the system, while increased Perception enhances shot accuracy.
