NFL quarterbacks come with a variety of different skill sets. While most have been defined by their ability to execute in the passing game, others have made a name for themselves by establishing a dominant rushing attack. Elite rushing quarterbacks have the ability to put a ton of pressure on opposing defenses as it adds another level to their offensive scheme.

The elite rushing quarterbacks have found a way to put up statistics that have rivaled running backs. Some of them have put up massive amounts of rushing yards in particular seasons. Here are the five highest rushing yardage totals in a single season by any quarterback in NFL history.

5. Bobby Douglass, Chicago Bears - 968 rushing yards (1972)

Bobby Douglass set an NFL record during the 1972 season with the Chicago Bears. His 968 rushing yards were the most in a single season by any quarterback ever. This record would stand for an impressive 34 years before it was finally broken in 2006.

4. Lamar Jackson, Baltimore Ravens - 1,005 rushing yards

A strong case can be made that Lamar Jackson is already the greatest rushing quarterback of all time, despite only being in the NFL for five seasons. All five of his seasons rank inside the top 21 single-season rushing yardage totals of all time. He has rushed for at least 695 yards in every season of his career.

3. Michael Vick, Atlanta Falcons - 1,039 rushing yards (2006)

Michael Vick became the first quarterback in NFL history to exceed 1,000 rushing yards in a single season. He did so during the 2006 season with the Atlanta Falcons. Vick finished inside the top 25 quarterbacks for the most rushing yards in a single season four times, including once with the Philadelphia Eagles.

2. Justin Fields, Chicago Bears- 1,117+ rushing yards (2022)

Justin Fields became the fourth quarterback in NFL history to exceed 1,117+ rushing yards in a single season. He did so in Week 15 of the 2022 season. Fields still has three more games remaining this year to increase his rushing yardage total even higher. He will likely continue to climb higher on this list.

1. Lamar Jackson, Baltimore Ravens - 1,206 rushing yards (2019)

Lamar Jackson set the record for most rushing yards by a quarterback in a single season during the 2019 season when he was named the MVP. He shattered the record, surpassing it by 167 yards. He is also the only quarterback ever to exceed 1,000 rushing yards in a single season multiple times. He accomplished all of this in his first three years in the league.
