Each offseason features several quarterbacks becoming new additions to NFL teams. This can sometimes be because their contract expires, making them a free agent. Other times, they are either traded or released by their teams due to failing to meet certain expectations. Underperforming can often result in losing their starting quarterback position.

With the 2023 offseason quickly approaching, several quarterbacks are facing potential changes. Trade rumors are already beginning to swirl around, while the class of potential free agents has taken shape. Here are five quarterbacks who could very well be playing for a new team when the 2023 season officially arrives:

#1 - Tom Brady, NFL

Tom Brady infamously retired during the 2022 offseason, only to change his mind a few weeks later and decide to return to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He is in the final year of his contract in 2022 and could be looking to make a change during the offseason. A return to the New England Patriots or joining his childhood favorite team, the San Francisco 49ers, are among the possibilities.

#2 - Jimmy Garoppolo, NFL

Jimmy Garoppolo will become a free agent at the conclusion of the 2022 season following his one-year contract extension with the San Francisco 49ers. He opened the season as a back-up for Trey Lance, but took over the starting job following an injury. He then suffered his own injury, and Brock Purdy became the starter, helping the 49ers continue their puch towards the playoffs.

It's hard to imagine the 49ers choosing Garoppolo over both Lance and Purdy. He will more than likely be playing for a new team in 2022. He figures to draw a ton of interest from several teams looking for a proven veteran quarterback.

#3 - Derek Carr, NFL

Derek Carr appears to be potentially nearing the end of his career with the Las Vegas Raiders. Following a disappointing 2022 season, he was officially benched for the remainder of the year with two games remaining, having been replaced by Jarrett Stidham.

It has also been announced that Carr will spend the final two weeks of the season away from the team, apparently to not serve as a distraction. Many signs point to him being permanently out as the Raiders' starting quarterback.

#4 - Baker Mayfield, NFL

The Cleveland Browns traded Baker Mayfield to the Carolina Panthers during the 2022 NFL offseason. After not working out as their starter, he was then sent to the Los Angeles Rams to replace the injured Matthew Stafford. He has done a decent job filling in for the Rams considering the circumstances, but Stafford will be their starter in 2023. Mayfield's contract expires at the end of the season, making him a free agent.

#5 - Lamar Jackson, NFL

Baltimore Ravens QB Lamar Jackson

While it's a bit of a longshot, it's entirely possible Lamar Jackson will be playing for a new team in 2023. His contract with the Baltimore Ravens expires at the end of the season. The two sides have been negotiating a new contract, but have been unable to agree on the terms. If they can't come to an agreement before the NFL free agency period, he will be able to explore other options with new teams.
