Andrew Luck reveals why he felt like a ‘failure’ for the first time in his life in tell-all interview about abrupt Colts retirement

Andrew Luck opens up on abrupt retirement

Andrew Luck's shocking retirement in 2019 still has an effect on the Indianapolis Colts three years later. They're still struggling to find an answer at quarterback after he decided to call it quits since his body couldn't take much more of what he had endured up to that point.

Luck had had several injuries up to that point. Each one was pretty serious, including torn labrums and other injuries. After the 2017 season, he had surgery on his arm.

The surgery was a success, but he still felt pain. By the time the season rolled around, he was still hurting and couldn't give it a go yet. He revealed that this was when he truly felt like a failure for the first time in his life, a fact he revealed in a tell-all interview with ESPN.

The shoulder injury was so bad that everything he did was molded around it. He would sit a certain way if it helped his shoulder. He would watch his posture so that his arm wouldn't be in pain. His whole life revolved around it.

Eventually, though he would play again after the injury, he walked away from the game after just six total seasons. He missed the entirety of that 2017 season with the shoulder injury, though.

What happened when Andrew Luck retired?

As mentioned, the retirement by Luck possibly set the franchise back several years. Even though it happened three years ago, the Colts have thrown everything at the position.

They started Jacboy Brissett, who was the retired star's backup, that season. In 2020, they signed Philip Rivers, who was on his way out of the league. Following his retirement, they traded for Carson Wentz.

Just a year later, they traded him away and traded for Matt Ryan, who briefly got benched this year. There is speculation that they'll try to trade for Aaron Rodgers next offseason.

They've tried a host of ideas at the quarterback position. Luck, who is just 33 now, could very well still be their quarterback if his body had held up. Instead, the Colts are genuinely still searching for answers.
