Antonio Brown has once again found himself in the headlines off the football field, this time due to legal troubles. The former NFL wide receiver was served with a petition for a risk protection order in Hillsborough County, Florida. The police department in the city of Tampa requested a risk protection order.
The order is intended to limit firearm and ammunition possession by persons who pose a danger to themselves or others. The request for a risk protection order was denied by a judge. The reason for the denial was not available through court records. Risk protection orders are part of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Act.
The act was passed in 2018 by the Florida Legislature after the devastating school shooting in Parkland, Florida, that killed 17 people. In circumstances where an individual endangers themselves or others, the statute lets law enforcement officers and agencies control their usage of firearms. For Brown, it's not the first time that the four-time All-Pro has been in trouble with the legal system.
Antonio Brown's legal woes
In 2018, Brown was sued for tossing furniture from the balcony of his South Florida apartment and nearly hitting a child. The former Pittsburgh Steelers star was sued in December last year by a personal chef for failing to pay and was involved in numerous domestic altercations.
The following year, Brown was cut by the New England Patriots. He also served an eight-game suspension after he was accused of sexual assault by a former personal trainer. The trainer later filed a lawsuit against Antonio Brown. After serving the suspension, he was later signed by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and ultimately settled the lawsuit.
In the 2021 season, Antonio Brown was suspended for three games for acquiring a fake COVID-19 vaccination card. In October this year, a video appeared showing Brown indecently exposing himself to patrons in a hotel swimming pool in Dubai.
Also in October, a judge in Florida said that Brown owes $1.2 million in a lawsuit originating from a 2020 incident. Brown supposedly assaulted a truck driver outside his Florida home.
Antonio Brown was last seen in the NFL during the aforementioned 2021 season with the Buccaneers. He exited the league in spectacular fashion. Brown removed his jersey and pads before running across the pitch mid-game, waving at the crowd as he made his way to the locker room. Given that and all of his history, it feels like we have seen the last of Antonio Brown in the NFL.
