NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell

A Buffalo Bills insider reports that the Buffalo versus Cincinnati Bengals will likely be rescheduled by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell. The game carries significant importance to the AFC playoff picture as both teams enter with a chance to become the top seed in the conference. With the regular season coming to a close, the question is how Goodell can fit the game into the schedule.

The Week 17 Monday Night Football matchup was initially suspended after Buffalo safety Damar Hamlin collapsed on the field. However, the pivotal matchup became more about Hamlin's well-being as both teams decided not to take the field. Goodell and the league office officially suspended the Week 17 game.

Should the game be played this week, if at all, Goodell could see Thursday or Saturday as possible days. Nonetheless, players on both the Bills and Bengals are more focused on Hamlin than on playing a football game.

Pro Football Hall of Fame voter Vic Carucci floated the idea that the league could implement a Week 19 so that the Bills and Bengals can get all their games in.

What happened to Bills safety Damar Hamlin?

In the first quarter of the game, Damar Hamlin tackled Bengals wide receiver Tee Higgins. Hamlin got up after the tackle, only to collapse back on the field. He was given medical attention on the field for around 15 minutes before he was placed on a stretcher and put in an ambulance. He was driven to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center

The Bills released a statement about Hamlin's health in the early hours of on Tuesday morning.

The statement said:

“His heartbeat was restored on the field and he was transferred to the UC Medical Center for further testing and treatment. He is currently sedated and listed in critical condition.”

NFL EVP of Football Operations Troy Vincent said coaches and medical staff receive an “emergency action play” every week 90 minutes prior to every NFL game. Vincent noted this when talking about the injury to Hamlin.

Vincent said:

“The emergency action plan went into effect. Obviously, we saw the coaches and players and, frankly, those that were tuned into the game, all traumatized, including myself personally just thinking through what is happening, what is taking place in real-time.”

For NFL fans all over the world, thoughts and prayers are with Hamlin and his family.
