Chase Edmonds' fantasy outlook: Is he a good pick?

In exchange for linebacker Bradley Chubb, the Miami Dolphins sent the Denver Broncos a trade package that included Chase Edmonds. Fantasy owners will have taken note and be interested in what this could mean for them.

Considering that Latavius Murray and Melvin Gordon III appear to be causing the Broncos some uncertainty, the deal gives Edmonds some interesting fantasy possibilities. He might be worth adding on a whim in deeper leagues.

Chase Edmonds lost the starting running back position in Miami and now finds himself in a Denver scheme that offers him another chance. However, it is unclear if any of their backs will ultimately take over the lead role, as the Broncos may use a committee to run the ball.

Denver have spread the carries since Javonte Williams suffered an ACL tear which ruled him out of the season. Edmonds will be yet another component for Nathaniel Hackett in that respect. Edmonds has recorded an average of 4.5 yards per rush, caught 76% of his 181 targets, and scored 17 touchdowns over five seasons between the Arizona Cardinals and the Miami Dolphins.

While Chase Edmonds can run the ball effectively, he is a weapon in the passing game, where he has caught 96 passes over the last two years. Despite playing alongside one of the NFL's most elusive runners in quarterback Kyler Murray, he achieved solid overall numbers.

Edmonds should have more chances to create exploits in the passing game as he moves to Denver. He has the opportunity to work with a more conventional pocket quarterback, which provides him with the upper hand to be the top-scoring back. However, fantasy players could grow impatient with Edmonds, as he is unlikely to dominate the backfield in touches. Latavius Murray is likely to get the main work-load in short-yardage situations, but Edmonds might usurp Melvin Gordon's role.

Chase Edmonds' stats and fantasy prediction

Edmonds lost the starting role to Raheem Mostert in Miami and as such has only carried the ball on 42 occasions for 120 yards and two touchdowns this season. In the Dolphins' 31-27 victory over the Detroit Lions last weekend, Edmonds had four touches for 14 yards.

Edmonds has a shot at regaining his fantasy relevance in Denver. However, he should prove his value before being started. Week 9 is the Broncos' bye week, so unless you are desperate, you shouldn't consider starting him until Week 12 at the earliest. If Chase Edmonds puts on a show for Denver, he could be a real asset. Until then, you should keep him on the bench.
