Could Kyle Trask become Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ starting quarterback next season?

There will probably be a new starting quarterback for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers next season, and Kyle Trask could be that guy.

No one knows for sure what free agent Tom Brady — who just completed his third season with the team — will decide to do this offseason. He might end up choosing to call it quits. As everybody knows, he retired following last season only to announce a comeback just 40 days later.

Brady could also re-sign with the Buccaneers or leave town for another franchise. The seven-time Super Bowl champion has been rumored to sign with several teams like the Las Vegas Raiders, San Francisco 49ers, Tennessee Titans and Dallas Cowboys.

If Brady retires or heads to another team, it's possible that Trask could get a chance to play meaningful minutes for Tampa next season.

Who is Kyle Trask?

Unless you’re a huge Buccaneers or college football fan, you probably have no idea who Kyle Trask is. Somebody who has only thrown nine passes in a regular season NFL game is not exactly a household name.

Trask had a remarkable career at the University of Florida. In 2019, he replaced injured starter Feleipe Franks as he threw for 2,941 yards, 25 touchdowns and seven interceptions.

The following season, Trask recorded 4,283 passing yards, 43 touchdowns and eight interceptions. He finished the 2020 season fourth in Heisman Trophy voting behind future first-round NFL draft picks DeVonta Smith, Trevor Lawrence and Mac Jones

Trask was later selected by Tampa in the second round (64th overall pick) of the 2021 NFL Draft. The Manvel, Texas native didn't play at all as a rookie, and appeared in one game this season for the Bucs, completing three of his nine pass attempts against the Atlanta Falcons.

If Brady leaves, the Buccaneers will likely replace him with a veteran quarterback this offseason. Someone like Jimmy Garoppolo, Derek Carr, Jacoby Brissett or maybe even Lamar Jackson could be brought in.

However, if that new quarterback gets hurt (knock on wood), Trask could be promoted to starter at some point. Tampa could also avoid the veteran route and start him at the beginning of the season as they look to tank for the top pick in the 2024 draft.

USC Heisman Trophy winner Caleb Williams is worth tanking for. Plus, Task, who's still on a cheap rookie deal, is a much cheaper option than acquiring a veteran.
