Caleb Williams' father, Carl, appeared to take an indirect swipe at Chicago Bears coach Matt Eberlus on Tuesday when he heaped praise on Washington Commanders defensive coordinator Joe Whitt on X.
While many believed that Carl was attempting to throw shade at Eberflus for his coaching decisions and tactics, the former cleared the air regarding his now-deleted tweet that created a buzz on social media.
670TheScore’s Shane Riordan spoke to Carl about his deleted tweet and said that the post was not aimed at the Bears and neither was it targeted at Eberflus. Instead, Carl explained that he was simply waxing lyrical on the Commanders.
“Innocent comment. I like what the Commanders are doing over there. I know some of those guys. Nothing to do with the Bears.” Carl said to Riordan.
Riordan also reiterated that Carl wants the best for his son, Caleb and wants him to succeed in the league.
Carl had reposted a video of Whitt saying that he was frustrated by his team's defense and turned his head away from the field so he didn't see Jayden Daniels’ iconic game-winning Hail Mary pass against Chicago. Carl also quote-tweeted "#accountability" and "#realcoach" on the video before deleting the post about 20 minutes later.
While it appears that Carl did not take a dig at Eberflus, the Bears coach is reportedly on the hot seat. Chicago is currently at the bottom of the NFC North with a 4-3 record. The Bears will travel to face the Arizona Cardinals in Week 9 on Sunday.
A glimpse into Caleb Williams' rookie NFL career so far
Although we're only halfway through the 2024 NFL season, Caleb Williams appears to have adapted well to the big league. The Bears drafted the quarterback with the top pick this year, after much hype around the former USC player.
Williams has completed 140 of 223 passes for 1,448 yards and thrown nine touchdowns, with five interceptions. He has also rushed for 216 yards on 34 carries across seven games.
While Williams has shown flashes of brilliance, he needs to be more consistent. Chicago is in a competitive NFC North division and will need to do a lot of work in the second half of the season if the team wants to make the playoffs.
