Instead, Texas A&M star quarterback Johnny Manziel became the first freshman to win the Heisman Trophy. Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te'o and KanState quarterback Collin Klein were the runner-ups.

In 2022, Smith became the starting quarterback for the first time in eight years. His only productive years were his first two seasons in the NFL when he played with the New York Jets. From 2015 to 2021, he started in only five out of 15 games.

While many critics questioned the ability of the veteran quarterback to make a comeback, Smith led the Seahawks to the playoffs. He started all 17 regular-season games, going 9-8. He threw for 4,282 yards with 30 touchdowns and 11 interceptions, accounting for his career's best performance so far.

The Seahawks suffered a 23-41 loss against the San Francisco 49ers in the wild-card round to end their season.
