Darius Slay is one of the NFL's best cornerbacks and also among the most vocal players in the league. Slay took to Twitter to share his thoughts on the controversial bill in Florida regarding Black Fraternities and Sororities on public college campuses.
The bill, H.B. 999, was passed by the Florida House and the state Senate must now pass its version of the bill, S.B. 266, before it can head to Governor Ron DeSantis' desk. Those against the bill are worried that its wording is too ambiguous.
The bill could be used to ban activities promoted by multicultural student unions, black fraternities and sororities, and curriculum in Jewish history, women's studies, and LGBTQ+ education. Comedian D.L. Hughley tweeted out other programs that will be impacted by the bill.
While the bill does not explicitly ban many of the groups mentioned in the tweet, activists and lawmakers alike have voiced concern over how the language could be used to target certain programs.
The American Historical Association is in opposition to this controversial bill. They explained in a statement the danger the bill entails.
The statement said:
"We express horror (not our usual "concern") at the assumptions that lie at the heart of this bill and its blatant and frontal attack on principles of academic freedom and shared governance central to higher education in the United States.
"This is not only about Florida. It is about the heart and soul of public higher education in the United States and about the role of history, historians, and historical thinking in the lives of the next generation of Americans."
Darius Slay's alma mater, Mississippi State University, has many Greek fraternities on its campus. However, the five-time Pro Bowler is concerned about the impact the Florida bill will have on its statewide campuses.
Will Darius Slay retire with the Eagles?
Slay signed a two-year, $42 million extension with the Philadelphia Eagles this offseason. The All-Pro cornerback told Eagles insider Dave Spadaro that he wants to end his career in the city of Brotherly Love.
“I plan on retiring as an Eagle. I’m not gonna lie. When my time is up, my time will be up from here.”
The 32-year-old started all 17 games for the Eagles last season, scoring 55 tackles and three interceptions. We'll see if Darius Slay can help Philadelphia get back to the Super Bowl this upcoming season.
