Eric Bieniemy delivers stunning response to LeSean McCoy’s criticism: "You have to eliminate distractions"

Former Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy recently left the team after winning a second Super Bowl to join the Washington Commanders.

He signed with the Commanders last week to serve as their offensive coordinator and assistant head coach to Ron Rivera.

Some were surprised that Bieniemy still hasn't landed a head coaching job, given the success he has had as an OC. One person who isn't surprised is one of his former running backs, LeSean McCoy. McCoy doesn't think Bieniemy is qualified for the head coaching position and that most of his success was due to Andy Reid's genius.

During media interviews today, Bieniemy responded to McCoy's remarks.

"He's a future Hall of Fame runner," he said. "Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. That's life, You got good, you got bad. It doesn't impact me in any way. The one thing you learn in this position is you have to eliminate distractions. My job is to focus on the now. Everything outside these walls has no impact on Eric Bieniemy moving forward."

Bieniemy was responding to comments McCoy made about his coaching credentials.

"What's his value? What makes him a good offensive coordinator? The problem is, a lot of these people that go on social media, 'He should be the guy for the job,' they haven't played there," McCoy said. "I've been in the rooms where he's coaching and he has nothing to do with the pass game at all. When the plays are designed, that's Andy Reid."

McCoy added:

"When you talk about offensive coordinators, I can tell you what makes Brian Daboll with the Giants a very good coordinator. I can tell you about Andy Reid or Doug Pederson. But Eric Bieniemy, what makes him good? When we watch the film of practices and we correct the wide receivers, the running backs, the quarterbacks, he doesn't talk in there. Andy Reid talks in there."

Bieniemy was an important piece for the Chiefs over the last five seasons.

He led the Chiefs to a top-five offense every year and won two Super Bowls with the team as offensive coordinator.

However, he didn't have full control of the offense. He split duties with head coach Andy Reid, who often called plays as the head coach.

With Washington, he will get full control of play-calling and running the offense, which was a big reason why he left the Chiefs for the Commanders.

He will try to revamp the Washington team, which finished 8-8-1 last season. The team will likely head into the season with second-year quarterback Sam Howell.

The offense features running backs Brian Robinson Jr. and Antonio Gibson, as well as receivers Terry McLaurin and Jahan Dotson. Bieniemy will have a big task this season in controlling and leading the Commanders' offense.
