The Dallas Cowboys are not giving up on their season despite a 3-5 record and Dak Prescott's hamstring injury. Ahead of the trade deadline, they have negotiated a deal to bring Carolina Panthers wide receiver Jonathan Mingo to Dallas.
NFL Network insiders Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero reported on Tuesday that the Cowboys are trading a 2025 fourth round pick in exchange for Mingo and a 2025 seventh round pick.
Mingo was selected in the second round of the 2023 NFL draft and started 14 games for the Panthers during his rookie season, hauling in 43 passes from 85 targets for 418 yards.
Jonathan Mingo has played a small role for Carolina this season, recording just 12 receptions for 121 yards in nine games. Still, the Cowboys will spend a lot of money on him.
Mingo will receive a guaranteed payment of $576,286 in 2024, $1,555,145 in 2025 and $1,957,718 in 2026 from the Cowboys, according to Spotrac.
Mingo's contributions to Carolina's offense diminished over the last four games, as he had only one catch for one yard from five targets, due to the early success of rookie WRs Xavier Legette and Jalen Coker. Going forward, he is expected to give the Cowboys' receiving group more physicality.
Dallas Cowboys WR depth chart after acquiring Jonathan Mingo
Following their acquisition of Jonathan Mingo, the Dallas Cowboys' WR room looks like this:
1) CeeDee Lamb
2) Jalen Brooks
3) Jalen Tolbert
4) Jonathan Mingo
5) KaVontae Turpin
6) Ryan Flournoy
Despite his lack of production with the Panthers, Mingo was a solid talent coming into the league and had a good run with Ole Miss, but it's difficult to see the Cowboys inserting him right away in the starting lineup given his lackluster stats this season.
However, with Brandin Cooks expected to return from a knee injury on Sunday, Mingo will compete with Tolbert for time on the field as the team's third-string wideout.
Even if Dallas decides to use him as the No. 3 WR, he is unlikely to make an immediate impact. Mingo should have more opportunities to establish himself as the season progresses.
The Cowboys will face the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday at AT&T Stadium.
