Justin Herbert is on the comeback trail following a 2023 season that was marred by poor play and injuries. In 2024, the former Offensive Rookie of the Year has greatly benefitted from Jim Harbaugh's "quarterback whisperer" attribute from when he coached the San Francisco 49ers in northern California and molded Alex Smith and Colin Kaepernick into elite players.
Already, his Los Angeles Chargers, barring a late-season collapse, have looked like playoff contenders despite losing multiple weapons to other teams. He can thank a revamped core led by "thunder and lightning" running backs Gus Edwards and Justice Hill and uber-rookie wideout Ladd McConkey for this.
More particularly, after a 2-2 start, he and the Chargers entered Monday night's "Harbaugh Bowl" against the Baltimore Ravens on a four-win streak. Did they maintain that momentum?
Justin Herbert's stats vs. Ravens
Here are Herbert's stats from the game versus Baltimore:
- Passes completed: 21-of-36
- Passing yards: 218
- Passer rating: 75.9
- Rushing attempts: 4
- Rushing yards: 29
- Rushing touchdowns: 1
Despite his game-manager performance, the Chargers lost 30-23 thanks to two factors: First, Harbaugh's decision-making in the penultimate drive. Trailing by 14, entrenched in the Ravens' 40, and facing a second down, he called for a pass even though a run would have sufficed. The result was a sack that cost them eight yards, all but killing the drive and necessitating a punt two plays later.
Second, Quentin Johnston straight-up disappeared from the game. The No. 21 overall pick of the 2023 NFL draft has always been plagued by dropping issues, but his performance tonight can only be described as disastrous.
He failed to secure any of his five targets, the most consequential being a drop on the third down of the aforementioned penultimate drive, with Tre'Davious White (who was beside him) the only one who could prevent him from turning the corner and sprinting for a first down.
Four sacks on Herbert did not help either, proving that despite the presence of Rashawn Slater, the offensive line is still a work in progress. On the other hand, the defense could not do anything about the Ravens' offense, sacking Lamar Jackson just once (by safety Derwin James) and allowing 140 yards from Derrick Henry.
Herbert and the Chargers will look to bounce back when they visit the Atlanta Falcons next on Sunday. Kickoff is at 1:00 p.m. ET on CBS.
