Justin Herbert: A Brief Biography

Justin Patrick Herbert (born March 10, 1998) is an American football quarterback for the Los Angeles Chargers of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football at Oregon, where he won the 2019 Pac-12 Championship and was named MVP of the 2020 Rose Bowl. He was selected by the Chargers sixth overall in the 2020 NFL Draft.

Herbert became the Chargers starting quarterback in the second game of his rookie year.Herbert remained the starter for the rest of the season. He set several rookie statistical records, including the most touchdown passes and the most 300-yard games. Herbert was named the AP NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year.

Justin Herbert’s Early Life and Background

Herbert was born in Eugene, Oregon, on March 10, 1998, and attended Sheldon High School, where he played football, basketball, and baseball. He suffered a broken leg in the third game of his junior season, complicating his recruitment process. As a senior, he passed for 3,130 yards and 37 touchdowns and rushed for 543 yards and 10 touchdowns. He was named 1st Team All-State and the Southwest Conference Offensive Player of the Year. Northern Arizona, Portland State, and Montana State extended offers before Nevada and Oregon followed up with his only FBS offers. Herbert committed to Oregon in October 2015.

For Oregon, Herbert was the first true freshman to start as a quarterback since Chris Miller in 1983. However, the Ducks finished with their worst record in 25 years and failed to make a bowl game for the first time in over a decade. In his sophomore campaign, Herbert was wildly successful before being derailed by injuries and was named first-team CoSIDA Academic All-American. In his third collegiate season, Herbert, with a new head coach, threw for 31 total touchdowns, good for 2nd in the Pac-12 Conference, which also earned him Pac-12 All-American first-team honors. In his senior season, he led the Ducks to a 12-2 record, along with a Rose Bowl victory where he ran for three touchdowns and was named offensive MVP. In addition to his on-field success, Herbert was named the 30th recipient of the William V. Campbell Trophy, also referred to as the “Academic Heisman”.

Who Drafted Justin Herbert?

Coming into the draft, Herbert was billed as a future QB1 after his amazing sophomore season, but he struggled as a junior in 2018 before rebounding with a good-but-not-great senior season. He was held back by the scheme and talent around him at Oregon, but he needed to learn to trust his traits more and be an aggressive thrower. Herbert had rare size and athleticism that could make him a Josh Allen-esque player, but he hadn’t used that ability to date. Unlocking it was deemed as the key to his success in the NFL. Herbert was selected sixth overall by the Los Angeles Chargers in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft. He was the third quarterback taken, behind Joe Burrow and Tua Tagovailoa. On July 25, 2020, Herbert signed his four-year rookie contract, worth a fully guaranteed $26.6 million.

Justin Herbert’s NFL Journey

In his relatively short career, Herbert has already established himself as one of the premier quarterbacks in the game and his name is taken in the same breath as the Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen’s of the world. Herbert already owns a bevy of awards and honors in his name, with a number of notable records already broken in his short time in the NFL. His excellent play earned him Rookie of the Year and Offensive Rookie of the Year and right from the beginning, the talent was clear as day to see. Herbert followed up with an equally, if not more, impressive sophomore season, leading the Chargers to a 9-8 record and his first career Pro Bowl. He came into the season ranked as the 40th-best player by his peers in the NFL Top 100 Players of 2022.

He carried on his amazing play, becoming the first rookie in NFL history to throw for four touchdowns on Monday Night Football. He was also awarded Offensive Rookie of the Month for his stellar play and he added yet more records to his name, becoming the first rookie quarterback in NFL history to throw for multiple touchdowns in seven consecutive games. He continued his phenomenal rookie season by breaking the NFL record for most passing touchdowns by a rookie and breaking the 4,000-yard mark for passing, becoming only the 4th rookie to achieve the feat. He was named Rookie of the Year and Offensive Rookie of the Year and was named to the NFL All-Rookie Team.
