The Los Angeles Chargers will be fielding a very different team from last season, and this has significant implications for fantasy football rosters in 2024.
After finishing 5-12, and last in the AFC West, the Chargers fired head coach Brandon Staley and have since replaced him with former Michigan head coach, Jim Harbaugh.
As well as a new head coach, many of LA's star offensive weapons have left the team during the offseason, with Austin Ekeler, Keenan Allen and Mike Williams all signing with new teams for 2024.
With so much change, the question is raised as to who will be the Chargers' offensive stars in 2024, and who will be the top fantasy football assets for the upcoming season.
Chargers best fantasy assets in 2024
#5 - J.K. Dobbins, RB
Jim Harbaugh's Michigan offense was driven by running the ball, so if J.K. Dobbins stays healthy he can play an important part in his new team's offense.
Dobbins joined the Chargers from Baltimore this offseason after suffering an achilles tendon injury early in the 2023 season. He previously tore an ACL and meniscus in his knee in 2021, which kept him out for the entire season and half of the 2022 season. He currently averages an outstanding 5.8 yards per carry throughout his career, but fantasy managers are urged to tread carefully due to his injury record.
#4 - Joshua Palmer, WR
Joshua Palmer emerged as a solid fantasy football option in 2023 with both Keenan Allen and Mike Williams missing time because of injury. According to FantasyPros.com he averaged 11.5 fantasy points per game when both were missing, as well as QB Justin Herbert.
With Allen and Williams now out of the building, Palmer will be competing with rookie Ladd McConkey for targets in the new-look Chargers offense.
#3 - Justin Herbert, QB
Justin Herbert finished as QB8 in fantasy points per game in 2023, but the underlying data could cause concern. According to Fantasy Points Data, he ranked 26th in yards per attempt, 22nd in CPOE, and 23rd in adjusted completion rate amongst 46 qualifying quarterbacks.
Despite having his season cut short through injury, Herbert still managed over 3,000 passing yards and 20 touchdowns. However, as new head coach Jim Harbaugh is known for run-heavy offenses, Herbert's fantasy production might suffer as a result.
#2 - Gus Edwards, RB
One beneficiary of a run-focused offense could be new running back, Gus Edwards. Like Dobbins, Edwards joins from the Baltimore Ravens and is coming off the best season of his career.
Edwards ended as RB25 in PPR scoring last year after amassing 990 total yards and 13 touchdowns, fourth-most TDs for his position.
While he's never been seen as a three-down running back, Edwards' ability to find the endzone makes him a solid RB3 choice in fantasy football for 2024.
#1 - Ladd McConkey, WR
Despite being a rookie, there's a legitimate chance Ladd McConkey is already the Chargers' best fantasy football asset. LA traded up to select McConkey at the beginning of the second round of the 2024 NFL Draft after having lost both Keenan Allen and Mike Williams during the offseason.
Despite missing time because of injuries during his final season with the Georgia Bulldogs, McConkey's 3.26 yards per route run was 8th in the country.
A smooth route-runner with speed and agility, McConkey wowed scouts with his 4.39 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine. He should play an important role in the Chargers' offense in 2024.
