Jimmy Garoppolo - San Francisco 49ers v Kansas City Chiefs

Jimmy Garoppolo was the starting quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers until a broken foot in Week 13 ended his season. Garoppolo started the season as a backup to second-year Trey Lance on the 49er's depth chart. However, due to a season-ending injury suffered by Lance Garoppolo took over the starting job.

Since taking over the starting role, Jimmy G has led the 49ers to a virtually secure passage to the NFL Playoffs. Hence, it was very worrying when Garoppolo went down against the Miami Dolphins, a game they ended up winning 33-17.

Brock Purdy helped steady the ship and he expertly called the shots in one of San Francisco's best wins this season. Following the game, head coach Kyle Shanahan announced that Jimmy Garoppolo would require season-ending surgery on his foot. Garoppolo is out for the year, with the injury putting an end to what could be his final season in San Francisco.

When will Jimmy Garoppolo return?

Garoppolo's recovery timeline is uncertain, and we only know that his season is over. He could be back for next season, however, there is no certainty as to exactly when or with which franchise that will be. Garoppolo will not play again in this campaign and as his 49ers contract expires following the 2022 season, there is nothing but speculation as to who he will return with.

What happened to Jimmy Garoppolo?

Jimmy Garoppolo was sacked by Miami Dolphins defensive backs Jerome Baker and Jaelan Phillips on San Francisco's first drive. Following what looked like a routine sack, Garoppolo made his way unassisted to the injury tent, after which he was taken to the San Francisco locker room. He did not return to the Gridiron for the game, and rookie QB Brock Purdy took his place.

Jimmy Garoppolo's 2022 season stats

Since being selected as an early draft pick by the New England Patriots, Garoppolo has been counted out and doubted. While in New England, he could never usurp Tom Brady as QB1, thus leading people to put an asterisk beside his two Super Bowl victories.

Following his trade to the San Francisco 49ers, he made one Super Bowl appearance, a loss which some critics blamed on him. Criticism and doubt have been a constant theme in his career, and this injury hurts more as he had silenced his critics with his play this season.

Garoppolo has played some of the best football of his career this campaign. He has amassed a stat line of 2,437 passing yards, 16 touchdowns, and four interceptions in 11 games.
