Mike Shanahan began working in the NFL after a 10-year stint in the college ranks. He landed a job as a receivers coach and later as offensive coordinator for the Denver Broncos from 1984 to 1987. His first head coaching job came in 1988 with the Los Angeles Raiders.

After a relatively underwhelming 12 months with the Los Angeles outfit, Mike spent three seasons as the 49ers' offensive coordinator, helping San Francisco win the Super Bowl in 1995.

Mike's success with the Niners saw him take up the head coaching job at the Denver Broncos in 1995. He led the Broncos to consecutive Super Bowl titles in 1998 and 1999. However, he was fired in 2008 after Denver failed to qualify for the playoffs for three seasons in a row.

Mike then took charge as head coach of the Washington Redskins in 2010 and received a five-year, $35 million contract. Shanahan helped the team to the NFC East title in 2012 but lost their first game in the playoffs that season. After a 3–13 finish in the 2013 season, Washington owner Dan Snyder fired Shanahan.

Over the course of his career as a head coach, Mike Shanahan compiled a 178-144 record across 20 seasons. He also had an 8-6 record in the playoffs.
