CeeDee Lamb has signed his desired contract extension with the Dallas Cowboys just before Week 1 of the 2024 NFL season, as reported by USA Today. However, his situation for the opening week, starting on Thursday, may be somewhat puzzling.
Lamb reported to the Cowboys late in the offseason due to his contract holdout and was granted an exemption from the team's 53-man roster. While this status is usually associated with injured players, it does not reflect Lamb's condition, as he is not injured. The exemption is because of his late appearance, which kept him from participating in training camp and preseason.
Despite being on the exempt list, he is expected to be given a roster spot and be in the starting lineup for Week 1. Lamb could be back as late as Saturday afternoon before the Sunday game against the Cleveland Browns, or any time before that.

CeeDee Lamb's Fantasy Outlook for Week 1
CeeDee Lamb finished last season as the overall WR1 in fantasy football. This would normally make him one of the best targets in Week 1 of the 2024 season, but his current situation carries more risk than usual.
Lamb has missed most offseason practices, which could affect his role in the season opener. He is still expected to be the Cowboys' primary wide receiver, but his workload may be reduced as he works to get back up to speed.
Fantasy managers must also consider the Cowboys' quarterback situation. Dak Prescott is still seeking a contract extension and wants to ink a deal before the season starts.
To add, Prescott and Lamb did not work together during training camp. So, the reigning top wide receiver may be a riskier fantasy option for Week 1.
Should I start CeeDee Lamb?
In season-long fantasy football, CeeDee Lamb is simply too good to leave on the bench, regardless of his unfavorable situation. Managers should start him, especially considering they likely spent a first-round pick to get him.
DFS formats are where Lamb becomes more of a fade because of his massive price tag when debating "Who Should I Start?" He is one of the most expensive wide receivers available, but his offseason inactivity, quarterback situation and a tough matchup against the Browns' elite defense suggest that a DFS budget is better spent elsewhere.
